High figures in errors cause Eastern to falter

Match Highlights

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team dropped its third consecutive match, falling in straight sets (22-25, 23-25, 26-28) to Miami University Friday, Oct. 17 inside the Convocation Center.  The Eagles' record fell to 11-10 (2-5 MAC), while the RedHawks improved to 11-8 (4-3 MAC).

EMU found itself playing from behind, particularly in the opening two sets, but never let the RedHawks take a substantial lead.  The evenness of the match was reflected in the Eagles having 16 block assists and solo bocks, while the RedHawks had 13 block assistst and two solo blocks.  In the end, the Eagles' hitting percentage of .161 was not sufficient compared to the RedHawks' clip of .227.

Three Eagles had double-digit kill tallies. Katie Krasowski (Oakl Lawn, Ill-Marist) led the way by tying her career high of 14 kills, while Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) and Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka Community) had 11 and 10, respectively.  Jill Briner (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park and River Forest (Northeastern)) led the Eagles with 37 assists, and also contributed three block assists.  Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) paced the Eagles in digs with 19, while Perinar's 12 scoops gave the junior her 12th double-double of the season.

Three RedHawks hit double-digit figures in digs.  Olivia Rysek led with 14 digs while Maeve MacDonald had 12 digs.  Krista Brakauskas contributed 10 digs and 19 assists.  Meg Riley led the RedHawks with 24 assists, while also contributing a game-high 6 block-assists. Jenny Ingle scored 11 kills to lead the offense with a .444 efficiency rate and was the only member of the Miami squad to notch double digits in kills.

The Eagles struggled out of the gate, facing an early 5-2 deficit in the opening frame.  From there, the Eagles frustrated the RedHawks, coming back to within a point on eight separate occasions before pulling even 20-20.  Just as the Eagles appeared to be building momentum, the RedHawks scored four of the next five points en route to a 25-22 opening set win.

Stacey Perinar led the Eagles in the opening set with six kills on just 13 swings, but four errors dropped her hitting percentage to a .154 clip.   Senior co-captain Briner had 10 of the Eagles' 12 assists.  For the RedHawks, the assisting duties were split between Meg Riley and Krista Brakauskas, who had seven and six dishes, respectively, while Olivia Rusek had four kills and eight digs.  The Eagles attacking percentage 15-7-42 (.190) was second best to the RedHawks pace of 16-6-44 (.227)

The second set was almost a carbon copy of the first.  Miami again enjoyed a fast start, wasting no time in taking an 8-3 lead.  However, the RedHawks could not build a substantial lead.  The Eagles rallied to 16-15 on the back of three consecutive points, their first lead since the opening point of the set. However, the RedHawks would score four of the next five points to take a 19-17 lead.  The Eagles came from behind twice to deadlock the score at 21-21.  However, Miami would score three of the final four points to take a two-set lead.

The attack was balanced in the second set. Krasowski had five kills and Stacey Perinar added three of her own to give each a two-set total of eight winners in the opening two frames. Briner added 14 more assists to lead all players, and Smith and Perinar each picked up five digs to lead all players in the set. Ingle led the RedHawks with six kills from the middle while hitting .625.  EMU's attacking percentage slightly decreased to .184 while the RedHawks attacking percentage slightly increased to .250 compared to the previous set.

Unlike the first two sets, the RedHawks were unable to take an early lead in the final set.  The Green and White appeared to be on their way to forcing a fourth set, leading by as many as 4 points on three separate occasions.  One point away from forcing a fourth set, an antenna violation was called in favor of Miami, equalizing the score at 25-25. Afterwards, the RedHawks would take three of the next four points en route to a 28-26 win.

Both teams registered their lowest hitting percentages in the final frame, with the Eagles hitting .109 while the RedHawks managed a .205 percentage.  Eastern had the statistical edge in kills, digs, and blocks over Miami, but its 12 errors proved fatal to the home squad.

Eastern Michigan completes its four-game home stint Saturday, Oct. 18 against Bowling Green State University.  The match is set to start at 7 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
