Eastern knocked off the Falcons to end a three-match losing streak

Match Highlights.

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team snapped a three-game losing streak, winning in straight sets (25-20, 26-24, 25-18) over Bowling Green State University Saturday, Oct. 18 inside the Convocation Center.  The Eagles' record improved to 12-10 (3-5 MAC), while the Falcons slipped to 4-16 (1-7 MAC).

Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka Community) led the Eagles with 11 kills and 14 digs for her 13th double-double of the season.  Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) contributed 12 digs. The Eastern Michigan attack was balanced, with five Eagles getting seven or more kills. Jill Briner (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park and River Forest) finished with a match-high 29 assists and an impressive .364 attacking percentage.  The team was tough from the service line, collecting eight aces while allowing just two from the Falcons, with Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) racking up four of the team's aces in a four-point run in the third set.

Jelena Sunjic was the only Falcon in double-digit figures, earning 10 kills on just 21 swings predominantly from the right pin.  Madeline Garda led all players with 22 digs, and the offense was paced by Erica Fullenkamp for the first two sets with 22 assists before Katie Scholten stepped in for the third frame, collecting seven helpers.

Momentum swung back and forth in opening set, with the Green and White having to call a timeout after falling behind 6-3.  The timeout proved to have an immediate impact, with the Eagles scoring 10 of the next 12 points to take a 13-8 lead.  However, the Falcons would not go away quietly, rattling of six of the next seven points to even the score at 14-14.  Just as it looked as though the Falcons were gaining momentum, the Eagles took seven of the next eight points to take a 21-15 lead.  EMU would hold on to take the first set, 25-20.

Briner contributed eight assists and four digs to lead the offense in the opening frame. Perinar remained came out balanced on the front and back lines, recording three kills to go with four digs. Both sides registered low attacking percentages due in large part to the blocking clinic occurring on both sides of the net, with the Eagles setting a pace of .083 while the Falcons hit just .061.

In the second set, each team kept the other within two points for point until the Eagles went on a run to take a 14-9 lead.  Once again, the Falcons would claw their way back to deadlock the score at 18-18.  With the score level at 22-22, the Eagles took four of the final six points to win the second set 26-24.

A key factor in the Eagles taking a two-set lead was their eight service aces compared to just one from the Falcons.  Once again, Perinar led the attack with four kills while picking up five digs for the Green and White, and Briner dished out 11 assists.  Both sides improved their attacking percentages, with the Eagles rising to a .214 clip, while the Falcons' pace reached a remarkable .394 thanks to hot hands from Sunjic and Nicole Slimko, who combined for nine kills on 17 swings with no errors.

BGSU looked determined to force a fourth set, taking an early 5-2 lead coming out of the break.  However, the Eagles would score eight consecutive points to take a 10-5 lead, forcing the Falcons to call a timeout.  The timeout did little to break the momentum, with the Eagles scoring 10 of the next 15 points to take a substantial lead. Comfortable with the advantage, Head Coach Kim Berrington subbed freshman Samantha Falco (Antioch, Ill.-Antioch Community) in for her first game donning the Green and White.  Falco registered her first career kill off an assist from Alyssa Davis (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Plainwell) to increase the scoring cushion to 20-10 before EMU completed the sweep with a convincing 25-18 win, condemning the Falcons to their third consecutive defeat.

The Eagles registered their best attacking percentage of the weekend in the final frame, with a pace of 17-7-44 (.295), while the Falcons fell back down to Earth at 10-6-38 (.105).  Four kills apiece came from Perinar, Katie Krasowski (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Marist), and Kelsey Jones (Reed City, Mich.-Reed City), who burried her four winners on just eight attempts.

Eastern Michigan begins a two-game road stint Friday, Oct. 24 against the University at Buffalo before heading off to face the Zips of the University of Akron.  The first match is set to start at 7 p.m. in Alumni Arena in Buffalo, N.Y.
