Eagles Push Past Buffalo in Five Sets

BUFFALO, N.Y. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team (13-10, 4-5 MAC) fought back against the University at Buffalo (13-10, 3-6 MAC) to take the 3-2 victory against the Mid-American Conference cross-divisional foe Friday, Oct. 24.
Junior Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill. / Minooka Community) paced the Eagles in their comeback victory, tallying 19 kills, just one shy of her career-best, while Jill Briner (Oak Park, Ill. / Oak Park and River Forest (Northeastern)) and Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich. / Mattawan) added 11 apiece for EMU. Redshirt-junior Katie Krasowski (Oak Lawn, Ill. / Marist) and sophomore Devon Murray (Shelby, Ohio / Shelby) each tacked on nine and eight kills, respectively.
On the defensive side of the ball Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio / St. Paul) got under a team-best 22 attacks, while Natalie Folk (Saline, Mich / Saline) added 14 digs to the defensive effort and Briner and Perinar tallied 12 apiece.
Buffalo's Tahleia Bishop set the pace for the Bulls in all five sets, including a match-best 23 kills, while Cassie Shado had 12 kills for UB. Defensively, both Marrisa Prinzbach and Niki Bozinoski had 15 digs for the Bulls, while two other players tacked on double-digit dig efforts.
In a close first set, the Eagles took the biggest lead of the contest when Murray and Dori Harrison (Euclid, Ohio / Beaumont School (South Florida)) combined on a block, giving EMU the 20-15 advantage over the Bulls. However, UB did not back down, scoring five-straight points to knot the game at 20-20. The set continued to go back-and-forth between the two cross-divisional foes, tying three more times, before the Bulls grabbed the final two points of the set to take the 25-23 victory.
Perinar led the Eastern Michigan attack with four kills in the first set and Briner and Crawshaw each had three, while Perinar had a team-best five digs.
Buffalo pick up right where they left off in the second set of the match, taking a 15-7 lead over EMU before the Green and White battled back to just a three-point deficit on a Bulls miscue. The Eagles were unable to continue the comeback, scoring just two final points in the set and allowing Buffalo to secure the 25-18 win and grab a 2-0 advantage heading into the third set.
The Eagles were once again paced by Perinar in set two as she grabbed three kill, while Harrison led EMU defensively with three digs.
With the match on the line, EMU did not give in as the contest was tied a total of 13 times between Eastern Michigan and Buffalo. The Eagles saw their biggest lead of the set when freshman Samantha Falco (Antioch, Ill. / Antitoch Community) drove home a kill off a set from Briner to extend the lead to 22-18. An attack error by Murray tied the score at 24-24, but a kill from Perinar and a service ace by Folk secured the Eagle win and forced a fourth set.
As EMU found its spark in the third set, Perinar continued to be a leader on the court tallying a team-best four kills and four other Eagles grabbed at least two kills in set three.
Eastern Michigan came out like a force in the fourth set going up 15-6 and causing the UB coach to call a timeout. Buffalo went on a five-point run to bring the score to 20-17, but the Eagles never relinquished the lead going on a three-point run of their own and closing out the set with a 25-19 win over the Bulls.
Crawshaw led the Green and White's offensive strike in the fourth set with four kills and Smith had her best defensive set of the match with nine digs to help EMU to a fifth set in the match.
In just their seventh five set match of the 2014 season, EMU again took the early lead over Buffalo, going up 5-3 to start the final set of action. The Eagles maintained at least a two-point lead throughout the rest of the final set and went up as many as four on a Crawshaw kill from Briner, bringing the score to 13-9. Eastern Michigan secured its fourth conference victory and 13th overall win when Perinar capitalized on a set from Alyssa Davis (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Plainwell), grabbing the 15-10 win over UB.
The Eagles produced their best hitting set of the match, hitting at a .500 clip as Perinar had a team-best five kills, while Murray added three for EMU.
Eastern Michigan will be back in action Saturday, Oct. 25 when it heads to Akron, Ohio to take on the Zips in a conference contest. First set it slated to start at 5 p.m.
