Women's Golf Claims No. 2 Seed Heading into Match Play

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team earned the No. 2 seed after 18 holes of stroke play at the Hoosier Fall Invitational, Oct. 17-19, at the Purgatory Golf Club. The Eagles posted a score of 300, one stroke behind top-seeded Indiana (299). The third seed for tomorrow's match play competition is Illinois (302), followed by No. 4 Fresno State (303), No. 5 Illinois State (315), No. 6 Boston College (316), No. 7 Ball State (317) and No. 8 Northern Illinois (319).
Indiana and Northern Illinois will tee off starting at 8:30 a.m. ET from hole No. 1. Illinois vs. Boston College starts off hole one at 9:20 a.m. ET. On the back nine it is Eastern Michigan vs. Ball State at 8:30 a.m. ET and Fresno State vs. Illinois State at 9:20 a.m. ET.
Following her sensation come-from-behind victory at the Nittany Lion Invitational, Oct. 3-5, sophomore Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) paced the Green and White in qualifying for match play with an even-over 72, putting her in a tie for second in the field. Two strokes back was Kylie Raines (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin Coffman) with a two-over 74, good for a tie for fifth.
Thelma Beck (Baden, France-Lycee Sainte Anne) carded a 76 to sit tied for 12th, while Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam) tied for 17th with a 78. Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-t. Augustine Secondary School) tacked on an opening round 81 for 29th-place.
Competing as an individual, Lauren Stephens (Dublin, Ohio-Coffman-Toledo) was forced to withdrawal from the tournament.
Schoof will face BSU's Allison Lindley at 8:30 a.m., followed by Lee Ping vs. Kelsey Sear at 8:40. It is Raines vs. Karley Dobis at 8:50, and Beck vs. Morgan Nadaline at 9 a.m. Rounding out the group is Murphy vs. Jenna Hague at 9:10 a.m.
The second round of match play will be contested Saturday afternoon with the final round to be played Sunday. All teams are guaranteed three matches. Live scoring is available at birdiefire.com.
