Video Highlights
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – After dropping the first two sets, the Eastern Michigan University volleyball team rallied back to even up its match with Northern Illinois University before falling in five sets Friday night, Oct. 10, 24-26, 15-25, 25-19, 26-24, 10-15. The setback was the first Mid-American Conference home loss for the Eagles (11-8, 2-3 MAC), while the Huskies improve to 12-7 on the season, including 5-0 in MAC play.
The Green and White was led by the arm of Stacey Perinar (Channahon, Ill.-Minooka Community). Perinar picked up 14 kills, with 10 of them coming in Eastern's two winning sets, while Katie Krasowski (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Marist) and Jill Briner (Oak Park, Ill.-Oak Park and River Forest (Northeastern) chipped in 11 apiece. Both Perinar and Briner recorded a double-double to their names, with Perinar scooping up 19 digs and Briner dishing out 44 assists. On the defensive side, Corynne Smith (Norwalk, Ohio-St. Paul) led all players with 23 digs, while Natalie Folk (Saline, Mich.-Saline) added 14. Krasowski led the Eagles with four block assists, followed by Megan Crawshaw (Mattawan, Mich.-Mattawan) and Kelsey Jones (Reed City, Mich.-Reed City) with three block assists apiece and a solo block to Jones's credit.
NIU was paced by Mackenzie Roddy's 23-kill performance, backed by Alexis Gonzalez's 50 assists. The Huskies were staunch defensively, with four players recording double-digit digs, while the front line formed a brick wall against the Eagle hitters with 16 blocks, led by Jenna Radtke with eight block assists and Lauren Zielinski with six helpers.
Eastern fell behind, 1-0, in the opening set after a 24-26 setback. Krasowski led EMU in the first frame with four kills on seven attempts, good for a .429 attack percentage. Melva Smith (South Holland, Ill.-Thornwood (South Suburban College) and Perinar each added three kills, while Briner setup 11 EMU kills. Defensively, Smith led the way with six digs, while both Folk and Dori Harrison (Euclid, Ohio-Beaumont School (South Florida) collected five. As a team, the Eagles had four blocks, Jones accounted for one solo block and one assist, while Crawshaw continued her quest for the most block assists in EMU history with two more.
EMU saw its hopes dwindle further in set two as it fell victim to another loss, 15-25. Krasowski added four more kills, while Briner added a pair along with six assists. Folk picked up the Eagles on the defensive side of the net with six digs, while Corynne Smith added four of her own.
Despite the need to win the final three sets, the Green and White did not give up, taking the third set by a 25-19 margin. In that set, Eastern hit at a match-high .321 clip behind four kills from Perinar. The Green and White was far more effective at its kill efficiency in first attempts, as evident by the drop in team digs. With the higher offensive output, the Eagles posted just 12 kills, but also kept the Huskies in low dig numbers with 10 for the set.
Perinar continued to shine in the fourth set, picking up six kills on 12 swings with just one error to go along with five digs. Briner also performed well on the offensive side with five kills on eight swings. Eastern saw an even effort in blocking, with Melva Smith, Jones, Krasowski and Crawshaw each recording a block assist to shut down at the net. The Huskies battled defensively, tallying 29 digs, but Eastern ultimately had the upper hand with a 26-24 victory to push into a deciding frame.
The fifth set proved to be the most inefficient hitting frame for both teams, as the Eagles hit at a -.045 clip while the Huskies posted a match-low .176 percentage. The Green and White fell behind early, trailing 5-0, but battled back to keep pace with the Huskies. Crawshaw provided a much-needed spark for the team, drilling all three of her attempts into the hardwood to lead the team in kills for the set. Unfortunately, the net defense of NIU proved to be fatal, with the team shutting down three attempts and forcing five errors in the 15-point set, and were able to walk away with a five-set win under its belt after the Eagles dropped the final set, 10-15.
Eastern returns to the court Saturday, Oct. 11, for Alumni Night, as well as the Eagles' Homecoming match. EMU will square off with in-state rival, Western Michigan at 7 p.m. following the Green and White's football contest with Buffalo at "The Factory" inside Rynearson Stadium. Fans with ticket stubs from the Eagles' football game will receive free admission to Saturday evening's matchup.
