YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —
The Eastern Michigan University volleyball dropped its second match in a row, falling in straight sets (17-25, 23-25, 19-25) to Western Michigan University Saturday, Oct. 11, inside the Convocation Center. The Eagles fell to 11-9 (2-4 MAC), while the Broncos improved to 12-7 (4-2 MAC).

EMU's offensive woes combined with strong play up front by Western Michigan resulted in just the second straight-set defeat for the Green and White this season. The Broncos tallied 18 block-assists and four solo blocks compared to just eight and one, respectively, for the Eagles. A hitting percentage of .054 (32-25-129) did not get the job done against WMU's .203 (43-17-128) pace.

Stacey Perinar led the Eagles with eight kills and Megan Crawshaw had six. Crawshaw also assisted on four blocks and was credited with one solo effort. Jill Briner assisted on 26 EMU points, while posting five kills of her own. Katie Krasowski and Natalie Folk both recorded a service ace apiece.

Four Broncos had at least four block-assists including Ave Stout, who stood tall on five and had one solo block. Stout also led all scorers with 12 kills and a robust .524 (12-1-21) attack percentage. Lexie Pawlik tallied 40 assists along with a solo block and four block-assists.

Both squads traded blows to begin the contest. After a Kelsey Jones kill put the home team ahead, 6-5, the Broncos fired back with four-straight points to take a 9-6 lead. Attacking errors plagued the Eagles through the middle of the opening set as WMU benefited from EMU's offensive miscues on three of its next four points.

Save for a Folk ace which represented EMU's 16th point, the Green and White generated little additional offense as the Broncos cruised to a 25-17 win. The Green and White ended the opening set with a -.047 hitting percentage (7-9-43), while the Broncos hit .171 (14-7-41). Mikaela Ryshytylo led all scorers with five kills and Pawlik had 13 assists for WMU. Perinar and Melva Smith each posted a pair of kills for the Eagles.

Head Coach Kim Berrington's team found itself behind, 6-3, in the second stanza. Just as the Eagles found some traction and tied the score at nine apiece with a Krasowski service ace, Western Michigan came up with three points for a 12-9 edge.

Later in the set, Perinar drilled an attack off the hand of a defender and then placed a perfect ball on the right edge of the court to knot the score, 18-18. Western went back up by a pair following a timeout, but a block-assist from Crawshaw and Briner and a WMU attack error propelled the Eagles into the lead, 21-20. That lead proved short-lived, however, as the Broncos – behind their eight block-assists— outlasted EMU, 25-23.

The Eagles hit .118 (15-9-51) in the second set compared to a .196 (13-4-46) pace for the Broncos. Perinar notched five kills in the set and Briner chipped in with a pair of kills to go along with 13 assists. Olivia Kofie turned in a strong effort for the visitors on both sides of the ball, racking up four kills and two block-assists. Ali Gossen also had a trio of block-assists and two kills.

Crawshaw and Smith combined to block an Alysia Banzik attack early in the third set to give EMU a 5-3 lead. The duo of Pawlik and Stout did the same for WMU on back-to-back points and touched off a six–point run. Western Michigan suddenly held a 12-8 advantage and maintained that lead until the end result of 25-19.

The final set concluded with Western Michigan outhitting the Eagles, .244 (16-6-41) to .086 (10-7-35).

Eastern Michigan continues its four-game home stint Friday, Oct. 17, when Miami University comes to town. The match is set to start at 7 p.m. in the Convocation Center.
