YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's swimming and diving team clinched a 65th-consecutive Mid-American Conference victory with its defeat of Ball State University, Jan. 25. The Eagles took down the Cardinals 163-115 in a dual meet that originally featured Ohio State University before the Buckeyes postponed the meet on account of hazardous weather conditions.
Though the Eagles are only listed as having won 10-of-16 events, the Green and White had built up such a considerable lead that it swam its final five events as exhibition races. Had the races counted for scoring, the team would have been flawless on the afternoon between the lane lines, as each race featured an EMU exhibition swimmer touching in before a Ball State competitor.
The squad also boasted a 1-2-3 sweep in four separate events. The first race with an EMU-dominated top-three was the 100 back, which was won by Cole Bateman (Hutchinson, Minn.-Hutchinson) in 52.36, while Chris Cutter (Fishers, Ind.-Fishers) and Blake Howe (Lansing, Mich.-Everett) rounded out the winning trio. The Eagles rattled off two more 1-2-3 finishes in a row, as Mike Fisher (Saline, Mich.-Saline), Chris Hodges (Lincolnshire, Ill.-Stevenson) and Grant Schwarz (Greenwood, Ind.-Center Grove) took the 100 breast and Marcin Rzyski (Liceum Ogolnoksztalcace #4), Aaron Lawson (Middletown, Ohio-Middletown), and Erik Gissen (Karlstad, Sweden-Alvkullegymnasiet) controlled the 200 fly. The final trio of Eagles that finished in a pack consisted of Cutter, Ethan McNally (Loveland, Colo.-Loveland), and Nate Schingoethe (Lake Park, Ill.-Lake Park) in the 200 back.
Senior Gus Everson (Sandusky, Ohio-Sandusky) led all swimmers in individual victories, as he won both the 50 free and 100 free, finishing in 21.67 and 46.82, respectively. Two other Eagles claimed victories for the team as Franco Petrone (Etobicoke, Ontario-Silverthorne Collegiate Institute) won the 1000 free by a margin of nearly seven seconds and Andrew Henry (Garner, N.C.-West Johnston) completed the 200 free in 1:42.34.
The pair of Alex Chan (Toronto, Ontario-Neil McNeil Catholic) and Sage Stephens (Warren, Ill-Warren) performed well on the springboards, as the two scored over 300 points in each event for the Green and White. Stephens claimed a victory on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 315.25, followed closely by Chan with a 310.10 mark. Chan then took over leading the diving squad on the 3-meter springboard, compiling 336.70 points to finish runner-up in the event, while Stephens's 312.90 points landed him in third place
Had the final five events been scored for competition, Henry would have picked up another win as the sophomore finished just before Brian Moore (Anthem, Ariz.-Boulder Creek) in the 500 free, both of whom finished 15 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. Additionally, Gissen touched in before a BSU swimmer in the 51.12, and freshmen Kyle Aerne (Lake Villa, Ill.-Lakes Community) and Kyle Lichtenberg (Clarkston, Mich.-Home School) would have won the 200 breast and 200 IM, respectively, with margins of victory at least five seconds ahead of the first place Cardinal swimmer.
As the Eagles have completed their home schedule, they will hit the road to take on Miami University, Saturday, Feb. 1 in Oxford, Ohio. The meet is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. and the Green and White will look to extend its conference win streak to 66 in its final MAC dual meet of the 2013-14 season.
