THREE RIVERS, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)--Eastern Michigan University's women's cross country team won the George Dales Invitational over Mid-American Conference opponent Western Michigan University, Friday, Sept. 20. The Eagles had a commanding lead over the Broncos, finishing with 18 points compared to WMU's 42 points.
The Green and White placed seven runners in the top-10 finishers, including a one-two-three finish by junior Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia / School #42), freshman Anna Aldrich (Fremont, Ind. / Fremont), and senior Kayla Pfund (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Lutheran North).
Voronko paced the Eagles for the third time in as many races this season, coming in at 21:16.55, over one minute before the next competitor and nearly two minutes before the first Bronco finisher. Head Coach Sue Parks said of the junior runner, "Victoria is in great shape and I am excited to see what she can do against top competition in this next stretch of meets." Aldrich notched a 22:34.49 mark, while teammate Pfund followed closely behind with a 22:39.76 finish.
"I'm happy with the win and the way that the team competed," said Parks. "it was very humid and the race went out extremely slow so the times were not fast. But I felt that we ran well as a team and showed improvement over our last meet."
This marks the fourth consecutive George Dales Invitational meet that the Eagles have won over the Broncos.
The Eagles will take a short recess before their next meet on Friday, Oct. 4, when they will compete at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
