Eagles will compete in the Notre Dame Invitational
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Following a two-week hiatus, Eastern Michigan Unversity's women's cross country team is making the trip to South Bend, Ind. to compete in the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, Oct. 4.
The invitational is one of the oldest collegiate cross country events in the nation with its 58th annual race being held on Friday. The men's race started in 1956 and the addition of a women's race came in 1987. A total of 1,210 runners will be competing from 60 different institutions between the men's and women's competitors. There will be five races, men's and women's Gold and Blue races and a JV/Open race.
The Green and White will be competing in the Women's Gold Race against 25 other institutions, including Mid-American Conference foes Central Michigan University and Western Michigan University.
Last year's outing was a success for the Eagles, as they turned in a fourth place team finish with returning harriers Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) and Kayla Pfund (Shelby Twp., Mich.-Lutheran North) landing in the top-20 of the field.
"I feel that the team has made a lot of progress since our last competition," said Head Coach Sue Parks. "This is the time of the year when we need to start seeing strong races by all of our scorers. Closing the gap between our first through fifth runners is going to be a huge key to our team's success this fall, and I hope to see some improvement in this meet. We're excited to compete in a national-level meet against top competition."
The 5,000 meter race is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start on the Notre Dame Golf Course.
