Weekly Notes
Coach Hall Interview
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team (1-4-1) will finish out its non-conference slate with a pair of matches at Scicluna Field this weekend. For the first time in program history, the Eagles will face a team from the Atlantic Sun Conference, taking on Stetson Friday, Sept. 20 at 5 p.m. Then, in its final game before Mid-American Conference play begins, Eastern goes toe-to-toe with Indiana State University on Cancer Awareness Day, Sunday Sept 20, with a 1 p.m. kick.
Offensively, EMU is led by senior Cara Cutaia along with juniors Angela Vultaggio and Bianca Rossi as the trio has combined for 15 points, including a team-high seven by Cutaia. The senior midfielder also leads EMU in goals (3) with Rossi quickly following with a pair of her own. Vultaggio, Martha Stevens and Stephanie Clarke each have found the net once for the Green and White. When it comes to sharing the ball, five different Eagles have recorded assists, including two by both Vultaggio and Marisa Kozikowski.
Sophomore Megan McCabe has been between the posts for the Green and White throughout the entire 2013 campaign. Playing all 578 minutes of the season so far, McCabe ranks third in the MAC and 55th nationally in saves, making 33 stops for a .750 save percentage.
Meet the Hatters: EMU and Stetson will meet for the first time in history as the Hatters leave the Sunshine State for Ypsilanti. While many of the Hatters may be unfamiliar with the state of Michigan, one player will have a homecoming of sorts as SU goalkeeper Victoria Trocolli is a Troy, Mich. native.
Stetson enters Friday's match with a 2-3-1 record, paced by four points from Amber Grose. The four goals scored by the SU this season have been by four different Hatters, and Trocolli has led the team defensively with 23 saves on the year. Stetson is currently in the midst of five straight matches away from its home in DeLand, Fla. Following the meeting with Eagles, the Hatters stay in Michigan to face Detroit, Sept. 22.
Cancer Awareness Day: The Sunday matinee with Indiana State will be a special day at Scicluna Field as EMU soccer will be recognizing the match as Cancer Awareness Day. The Eagles will don special white jerseys with teal-color numbers, the color of ovaraian cancer awareness. Following the match, the jerseys will be auctioned off with proceeds going to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition in Cheryl Kaim's name. Cheryl Kaim, mother of current EMU senior Allison Kaim and former player Julie Kaim, passed away in 2011 fighting ovaraian cancer. Cheryl was not only a mother to her girls, but to the entire EMU soccer team. She showed her bravery and strength fighting the horrific disease, refusing to quit.
Scouting the Sycamores: The Eagles will look to make it a perfect 3-0-0 against Indiana State when the two teams play Sunday Sept. 22. While having four seniors on the squad, the Sycamores rely on their youth on the pitch. ISU (3-4-0) is led in scoring by the dynamic duo of Katie Johnson and Abby Reed, who are tied for a team best 10 points and four goals. Freshman Brittany San Roman is the primary goalkeeper for the Sycamores, making a Missouri Valley Conference leading 34 saves while allowing 10 goals in six games played. The alma mater of NBA great Larry Bird will face two MAC opponents this weekend, facing Toledo, Sept. 20, before traveling to Ypsilanti.
Last Time We Met: The Green and White came away with a 2-1 victory the last time out against Indiana State, Aug. 30, 2009. Amanda Marsh's header in the 89th-minute provided the thrilling game-winning goal to propel the Eagles to a 2-0-0 start on the season. Both teams struggled out of the gate, playing to a scoreless tie and managing just four shots apiece in the first half.
The second half was a completely different story, however. The Eagles put up 14 shots in the last frame, seven of which were put on goal. Paige Sheridan got things going for the Green and White with her one touch shot off a headed pass from Maggie Christensen in the 70th-minute. It came following a ricochet in the box off an Eagle corner kick. Fifteen minutes later, the Sycamores responded. Seyma Erenli, tracked down a loose ball and chipped a shot in over the head of Eagle keeper, Maggie Manville, from about 20 yards out to tie the game at, 1-1. It felt as if overtime would be quick to follow until EMU's Brandi Wood placed her throw in from the sideline six yards in front of the goal, giving Marsh the perfect opportunity to head in the game-winner and she took full advantage.
Penalty Kicks Doom Eagles Against Michigan State: Returning to the friendly confines of Scicluna Field following four straight matches on the road, penalty kicks doomed the Eastern Michigan soccer team as it fell, 3-2, to Michigan State University Sunday afternoon, Sept. 15. Trailing, 2-0, with less than twenty minutes to play, the Eagles (1-4-1) roared all the way back to tie the contest at two goals apiece. However, a foul in the box with just 2:40 remaining set up a penalty kick for the Spartans (6-0-2), and they capitalized to take the lead for good, holding on for a 3-2 victory.
Bianca Rossi found the net for the second time this season, while teammate Stephanie Clarke scored her first goal of 2013 on a penalty kick. The Eagles outshot the Spartans, 22-16, firing 10 shots on goal. Michigan State attempted seven shots on goal, with EMU sophomore goalkeeper Megan McCabe (1-4-1) making four saves.
#MACtion Around the Corner: Following eight non-conference matches to start the season, the Eagles open up Mid-American Conference play with two matches at Scicluna Field. First, EMU battles the Huskies of Northern Illinois University, Sept. 27, at 5 p.m., and two days later, Eastern turns right around to face another MAC foe as Toledo crosses the border to face the Eagles. The Sunday, Sept. 29, kickoff against the Rockets is set for 1 p.m. The two-match conference kickoff will conclude a five game homestand for the Green and White as the Eagles hit the road the following week to square off with Bowling Green State University, Oct. 4, and Central Michigan University, Oct. 6.
Rigorous Non-Conference Slate: Nothing will come easily for the Green and White this season as Coach Scott Hall hopes a grueling non-conference schedule will prepare the Eagles for MAC play. So far, the Eagles have faced two nationally-ranked teams in Ohio State and Michigan, taking both teams to overtime before falling by a 2-1 decision in back-to-back contests taking place away from the friendly confines of Scicluna Field. The Green and White have also faced unbeaten Big Ten foes in Indiana and Michigan State, who are a combined 12-0-3. The teams on Eastern's non-conference schedule currently post a combined record of 37-14-8. With a .695 winning percentage, the Eagles' road to MAC play is a difficult one to travel.
