ANN ARBOR, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team kicked off its 2013-14 season Monday, Sept. 16, at the Wolverine Intercollegiate on the U-M Golf Course. The Eagles reside in seventh place with a two-round score of 581 (297-284), as Michigan State leads the tournament after rounds of 294 and 277 for a 36-hole mark of 571.
Battling blustery conditions, senior Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) is nine strokes off the lead following rounds of 70 and 71. With back-to-back rounds at par-or-better to open the tourament, Churchill-Smith now has 22 rounds in his career, the most of any active EMU student-athlete.
San Jose State's Cody Blick posted a 10-under 132 (68-64) while Michigan State's Mitch Rutledge is four shots back at 136 (70-66).
Sophomore Stuart Grehan (Tullamore, Ireland-Colaiste Choilm) is tied for 14th place with a 144 (75-69), while classmate Josh Heinze (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) will start Tuesday tied for 23rd place with a 146 (75-71).
Sophomore Brett White (Kentwood, Mich.-East Kentwood) shot a 152 (77-75) to tie for 44th place, while freshman Kyle Rodes (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) finished the day tied for 48th with a 154 (81-73). Playing as an individual, junior Michael Blair (Ancaster, Ontario, Canada-Ancaster Secondary-Pfeiffer) notched a 149 (77-72) for 35th place.
Competitors will resume play at 8 p.m. Tuesday morning.
