Murphy Records Top 15 Showing in Debut at Fossum Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- In her first collegiate tournament, Eastern Michigan University freshman Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) recorded a top-15 showing, finishing in a tie for 14th place, at the 30th Annual Mary Fossum Invitational on the par 72, 6,348-yard Forest Akers West Golf Course, Sept. 14-15.
Competing against some of the region's best golfers, the highly acclaimed Plymouth, Mich. native carded a 77 in the final round to finish with a 226 (74-75-77). Murphy becomes the first EMU freshman since Catherine Fortin to lead the squad in scoring during the opening tournament of the season. Fortin fired at 237 (79-79-79) to finish in a tie for 29th place at the Notre Dame Invitational, Sept. 4-5, 2004.
As a team, the Eagles finished 10th with a team score of 934 (311-309-314) as host Michigan State University took home the invitational hardware with an 892 (288-29-308). The Spartans defeated Ohio State by four shots to win their home tournament for the eighth time in the past 11 years. MSU's Liz Nagel captured medalist honors with a one-over 217 (68-75-74).
Redshirt sophomore Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) carded a 79 on Sunday to finish tied for 41st with a 233 (76-78-79). Junior Sylvie Williams (Christchurch, New Zealand-Lincoln) followed with a 237 (80-79-78) while senior Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) turned in a 238 (81-77-80) for 53rd. Senior Rushda Mallick (Cape Town, South Africa-Glenwood House-Cape Peninsula University of Technology) rounded out the lineup with a 267 (89-85-93) for 93rd place.
Playing as an individual, senior Usanee Laopattananont (Bangplee, Thailand-Thai Christian School) turned in rounds of 84,77 and 80 to take 61st with a cumulative total of 241.
The Eagles are next in action Sept. 27-29 at the Nittany Lion Invitational in University Park, Pa.
