Eastern Sits in 10th After Day One of the Mary Fossum Invite

EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team currently sits in 10th place after the first day of the 15-team Mary Fossum Invitational hosted by Michigan State University at Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing. EMU shot a 620 on day one, with a 311 on the first 18 holes and 309 in the second round.
The host, Spartans, hold an eight stroke edge after a pair of rounds, as they've shot just eight-over par after 36 holes of play at the 72-par Forest Akers West, which is playing at 6,236 yards. MSU leads with a 584, followed by Ohio State (592), Notre Dame (600), Oregon (602), Northwestern (605), Miami (607), East Tennessee State (609), Florida International (610), Toledo (613), Eastern Michigan (620), Indiana (627), Ferris State (635), Louisiana-Monroe (637), Western Michigan (642) and Oakland (650).
Individually, Liz Nagel of Michigan State leads the pack with a one-under par performance in the opening 32 holes. Nagel shot a four-under 68, before posting a three-over 75 in the second 18. She is the only student-athlete with a score under par.
EMU sits in 10th with an overall score of a 620, scoring a 311 in the first round and a 309 in the second 18. Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) boasts the best position for EMU as she is tied for 11th place overall with a total score of 149. After shooting a two-over 74 and a three-over 75 in round two, she is six strokes from the leader. Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) sits tied for 34th place with a 154 after carding rounds of 76 and 78. Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada, Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) shot a 158 good for a tie in 53 rd place, while Sylvie Williams (Christchurch, New Zealand-Christchurch Girls School) notched a 159 and Rushda Mallick (Cape Town, South Africa-Glenwood House) added a 174 for EMU.
The third and final round of the Mary Fossum Invitational will take place Sunday, Sept. 15, at the Forest Akers West Golf Course. Live scoring is available at www.golfstat.com. The first tee time of the day is set for 8:30 a.m.
