BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan men's cross country team had a strong showing Friday evening, Sept. 13, at the Mel Brodt Collegiate Opener, placing three runners in the top-10, the most out of any Mid-American Conference school.

The squad was led by redshirt junior Ian Hancke (Haslett, Mich. / Haslett), who finished the 8000 meter race with a time of 25:28.33 that snagged him a third-place finish.  Sophomore Austin Lane (Greenwich, N.Y. / Greenwich Central) was the next Eagle to cross the finish line with a mark of 25:48.16, followed closely behind by junior Cameron Trinh (Oakland, Calif. / Skyline) with a 25:51.93 finish.

The Eagles did not falter from the chilly climate and brisk winds at Bowling Green State University; at the close of the first loop Hancke, Lane, and Trinh ran in a tight pack in the top four.  As the runners began to spread out, Hancke maintained a pace behind the lead runner and fell to his eventual third place position during the third and final loop around the course.

Freshman Nicolas Trefz (Fairmont, W.Va / Fairmont) made his debut for the Green and White and nabbed a 20th place finish with his time of 26:29.93.  Rounding out the Eastern harriers were sophomores William Trice (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Forest Hills Northern) and Brandon Wynsma (Augusta, Mich. / Richland Gull Lake).  The race  between the 45 competitors was won by unattached runner Jarrod Eick.  The meet was not scored.

Regarding the race, Head Coach John Goodridge stayed ever positive in reflection of the event, saying, "I like what I saw today and see lots of positive things we can build on."

The Eagles will have time to build on their race with Goodridge until Friday, Oct. 4, when they will make the jaunt to South Bend, Ind. for the Notre Dame Invitational.
