YPSIALNTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) --
The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team (1-1-0) will continue its 2013 season facing a Big Ten Conference and nationally-ranked opponent for the second straight game as the Eagles travel to No. 14-ranked Michigan (2-0-0) Friday, Aug. 30. The contest between the two Washtenaw County rivals is set to begin at 7:30 p.m. at U-M Soccer Stadium.

The Eagles are coming off the first weekend of the 2013 campaign where they split games with Detroit and Ohio State. EMU clipped Detroit, 3-2, Aug. 23, in the season-opener at Scicluna Field. Two days later, Coach Scott Hall's squad took the No. 23-ranked Buckeyes to overtime, dropping the tightly contested match, 2-1, on the road, Aug. 25.

Team co-captain Cara Cutaia leads the Green and White in points (5) and goals (2). Angela Vultaggio is closely behind Cutaia with three points as well as one goal. Junior Martha Stevens has scored the other goal for EMU, arguably the biggest one of the season so far, scoring the game-winner against Detroit, Aug. 23. Between the posts, Megan McCabe has recorded nine saves through the first two matches, a mark that leads the MAC.

The Wolverines have made their presence known throughout the nation following a weekend where they scored nine goals, while allowing just one goal in two games. Michigan defeated the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 3-0, in its Aug. 23 season opener before downing Oakland University, 6-1, Aug. 25.

One week into the season, Michigan leads the Big Ten in points, goals and assists. Senior forward Nkem Ezurike tallied seven points last weekend to lead the Maize and Blue in points; she is also tied with teammates Nicky Waldeck and Christina Ordonez with the team lead in goals (2). Due to a strong defensive unit, U-M goalkeeper Taylor Bucklin has only had to make two saves in 158 minutes of play.

Battle of Washtenaw County: The Eagles and Wolverines will take the pitch against each other for the ninth time in history, Friday. EMU will be looking to conquer Michigan for the first time as the Wolverines lead the all-time series 6-0-2. The teams battled to a 1-1 draw the last time these two county rivals faced one another, Aug. 22,  2010.

Last Time We Met: After falling behind 1-0, the EMU soccer team scored a goal in the 81st minute to force overtime, tying Michigan, 1-1, Sunday, Aug. 22,  2010 in front of 958 fans at the U-M Soccer Stadium. Then-senior Maggie Christensen found the back of the net with 8:31 remaining in regulation, forcing the game to overtime. The Wolverines totaled 32 shots in the match, including 11 on-goal. The Eagles only had eight shots, with five of them on-goal. The defense was ratcheted up in the extra time as the Eagles were unable to get a shot off during either overtime period. Michigan managed just five shots, two on-goal, as the game ended in a 1-1 tie.

Eagles Split to Open 2013 Campaign: Eastern finished the opening weekend of the 2013 season with a record of 1-1-0. Two unanswered goals propelled the Green and White to a 3-2 season-opening victory over the Detroit Titans Friday evening, Aug. 23, at Scicluna Field. Junior midfielder Martha Stevens used her head to score the game-winning goal for the Eagles after receiving a perfect cross from senior Stephanie Clarke in the game's 68th minute. EMU controlled ball possession for the majority of the contest's remaining 22 minutes to secure the victory in the season opener for both teams.

EMU dropped a 2-1 overtime decision to No. 23-ranked Ohio State in the first road test of the season for the Eagles, Aug. 25. OSU's Ellyn Gruber scored the game-winner eight minutes into the first overtime to help the Buckeyes escape with the victory. Cutaia scored in the 30th minute for EMU (1-1-0) in what ended up being the lone goal for the Eagles. Megan McCabe stopped four-of-six OSU shots on goal for the Green and White. The Eagles were outshot 19-9 by the Buckeyes.

Cutaia Climbing the MAC Charts:  An Academic All-Mid-American Conference and All-MAC Second Team honoree a season ago, senior midfielder Cara Cutaia ranks second in the conference in goals (2) as well as points (5) following the season-opening weekend in which the Eagles defeated Detroit, 3-2, and fell to No. 23 Ohio State, 2-1, in overtime.

Against the Titans, Aug. 23, Cutaia connected with Angela Vultaggio for the Green and White's first goal of the season. In the second half, she provided the game-tying goal before another EMU goal gave the Eagles the victory.

Cutaia gave the Eagles an early 1-0 lead on the road against the nationally-ranked Buckeyes, Aug. 25. However, OSU would score in the second half as well as overtime to win the tightly-contested match, 2-1.

McCabe Named MAC Defensive Player of the Week: EMU goalkeeper Megan McCabe was named the Mid-American Conference Women's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending, Aug. 25. The sophomore goalkeeper earned the accolade for the second time in her career after recording nine saves in 188+ minutes in the first two contests of the 2013 campaign. Her nine saves and minutes played lead the conference through the first weekend of the season.

The Arlington Heights, Ill. native racked up five saves in a 3-2 season-opening victory over Detroit, Aug. 23. She also kept No. 23-ranked Ohio State in check, allowing one goal in 90 minutes of regulation before the Buckeyes scored eight minutes into overtime to claim a 2-1 victory. McCabe stopped four-of-six OSU shots on-goal for the Green and White, including a clutch save with 23 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.

In her second season at EMU, McCabe holds a 4-1-0 record between the posts. During her freshman season, she claimed MAC Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors, Oct. 25, 2012. McCabe made seven stops on eight shots in a 2-1 win over Western Michigan, which included several key saves to prevent the Broncos from tying the score.

Off to Indiana: Next week, Eastern heads to the Hoosier State for a pair of non-conference matchups. The Green and White will face a B1G opponent for the third straight game, going toe-to-toe with Indiana University (2-0-0), Sept. 6. The weekend road trip to Indiana concludes two days later with a meeting against the Butler University Bulldogs (1-1-0), Sept. 8.
