YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team will try to complete the conference championship sweep with a victory at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, May 9-11. The action will take place at the Lee R. Jackson Track and Field Complex on the campus of the University of Akron. The javelin throw trials and finals along with the 100-meter dash in the decathlon will kick off the meet on the men's side, beginning Thursday, May 9, at 1:15 p.m.
“We are looking forward to the championships and expect it to be a hard fought competitive event,” commented EMU Head Coach John Goodridge.
Already having won the 2013 MAC Indoor Championships on its own Bob Parks Track, Feb. 22-23, Eastern will attempt to win both conference titles for the first time since 2010. Coincidentally, the Most Valuable Performer at the 2010 MAC Outdoor Championships was EMU's Terefe Ejigu, a freshman at the time. Ejigu, now in his final season donning the Green and White, earned the same distinction at this year's indoor conference championship meet with victories in the 3,000-meter and the 5,000-meter run. The Wellington, New Zealand native will look to complete an impressive individual sweep of his own this weekend. The EMU distance runner already has been the MVP at the previous three MAC Outdoor Championships, and claiming the honor this weekend would make him the award winner in each year he has been an Eagle.
Scoring 157.5 points to secure the indoor conference crown, the Eagles also placed 10 athletes on the All-MAC First Team. Aside from Ejigu's two championship runs, Matthew Williams and Grzegorz Kalinowski raced to victory in the 200-meter dash and the one-mile run, respectively. Willams teamed with Jason Ervin, Jeff Elam and Cameron Bolton to win the 4x400-meter relay while Kalinowski joined teammates Scott Bradley, Ian Hancke and Chris Scott to fly past the competition in the distance medley relay. The other indoor conference champion, Donald Scott, who won the triple jump, has not competed this outdoor season after being redshirted.
The EMU men's cross country team also won the MAC Championship this school year, meaning if the Eagles were to win this weekend in Akron, they would pull off a rare triple crown-type performance, with some athletes participating on all three championship teams. The last time Eastern accomplished this feat was during the 2006-07 academic year.
EMU placed fourth in the 2012 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, May 10-12, after scoring 128 points in three days of competition. The University of Akron took first as it accumulated 171 points. Along with a victory in the 10,000-meter run, Ejigu added another first-place crown to his arsenal by winning the 5,000-meter run in 15:11.38. Also, Josh George took the top-spot in the 800-meter run with a 1:51.68
Throughout the outdoor campaign, the EMU relays teams have thrived. Eastern holds the best time in the conference for both the 4x100-meter relay as well as the 4x400-meter relay. The team's best 4x100-meter relay came at the Toledo Invitational this past weekend, May 2-3. The quartet of Bolton, Williams, Wayne Blanchard and Jay Saunders combined for a time of 40.64, just 0.21 seconds away from cracking the top-ten marks in EMU history. As for the 4x400-meter relay, the Eagles' top time of 3:11.20 came at the Sea Ray Relays, April 27, ran by Bolton, Elam, Williams and Chris Scott.
Speaking of Bolton, he enters the MAC Outdoor Championships with the best mark out of any other athlete in the conference running the 200-meter dash. The Missouri City, Texas native achieved the time at the famous Mt. SAC Relays, April 19, crossing the finish line in 21.26.
Coach Goodridge joins Men's Track and Field Weekly on Eagle All-Access to talk about what it would mean for the Eagles to win the MAC Outdoor Championships and pull off the triple crown.
