FORT WAYNE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a pair of games against the IPFW Mastodons Tuesday, April 9, at the IPFW Softball Field. The Eagles (10-21-1) fell 10-2 in five innings in the opener of the doubleheader, while the Mastodons (18-8) scored a run in the bottom half of the eighth in the second game to take the nightcap of the twinbill.
Game One
Eastern managed just one hit in the first game but were able to push a pair across the plate. Amanda Stanton (Homer Glen, Ill.-Lockport Township) had the Eagles only hit, while Aoife Duffy (Powell, Ohio-Olentangy Liberty) picked up the first RBI of her career.
Lauren Wells (Lowell, Ind.-Lowell) made the start for EMU. Wells (0-11) was touched up for six runs on four hits in just 0.1 innings of work. Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles) tossed the final 4.1 innings and surrendered four runs on five hits, while walking four. Miranda Kramer (10-4) tossed a complete game and allowed just one hit.
IPFW's bats came out thundering in the first game as they scored eight runs on six hits in the first inning. After getting the first Mastodon batter on strikes, Wells was touched for a pair of hits, then walked two in-a-row to score the first run of the game. Wells made an early exit after surrendering three runs. Ignowski inherited a bases loaded jam and allowed five more runs to cross the plate, three of which were charged to Wells in the first as IPFW took an 8-0 lead after an inning of play.
The Eagles were able to score a pair in the top of the fifth. Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles) led the inning off with a hit by pitch. Stanton poked the Eagles' only hit of the game with a single through the left side. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Coquillard crossed the plate on a wild pitch to score the Eagles first run, making it 8-1. Duffy was able to pick-up the Eagles' only run batted in on a groundout that scored Stanton from third making it 8-2 and ending EMU's scoring for game one.
The Mastodons put softball's run-rule in effect in the bottom half of the fifth when they scored a pair of runs on three hits to give them the final 10-2 tally.
Game Two
The Eagles posted 10 hits in the second half of the doubleheader. Amanda Herron (Columbus, Ohio-St. Francis De Sales) went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and runs scored, while driving in one. Duffy posted her first career multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 in the extra inning loss. Elaine Whitbeck (Holland, Mich.-West Ottawa) went 1-for-3 with a run scored. Coquillard and Stanton had the Eagles other two RBI in the second game of the twinbill.
Lindsay Rich (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) got the start for EMU, going 6.2 innings and surrendering four runs on 12 hits. Wells (0-12) was the tough luck loser in game two as well after being charged with a run in 0.1 innings of work. Kramer (11-4) earned her second win of the day tossing the eighth inning for IPFW without allowing a run.
EMU opened the scoring in the top of the first. Herron had a two-out single and stole second to get into scoring position. Coquillard hit an infield single which scored Herron to give Eastern an early 1-0 lead in the first.
The Eagles doubled their lead in the third, when Whitbeck led off the inning with a bunt base hit. Whitbeck advanced on a fielding error to put runners at first and second. Nicholson was hit by a pitch in the next at-bat to load the bases. Herron used a fielder's choice to give EMU a 2-0 lead.
Alex Bousquet ripped a solo homer to left field to bring IPFW within one, 2-1. The Mastodons then tied it up in the fifth when Hilary Kartman singled to center field scoring Dani Pugh.
The Eagles retook the lead in the sixth. Duffy led off with a single and Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange) pinch ran for Duffy and later scored on an error by the Mastodons' second baseman to put EMU up 3-2. EMU added another run to its lead in the seventh, Herron scored on Stanton's one-out double to put the Eagles in position to win the nightcap.
IPFW did not go away quietly in the seventh. They added a pair to tie it up on three hits and send it into extra innings. EMU did not score in their half of the eighth keeping it tied, 4-4, in the bottom of the inning. Ashleigh Bousquet walked to lead off the inning and then moved to scoring position on a wild pitch by Wells, which finished her day in the circle. Ignowski allowed a pair of base hits to score the Mastodons' final run and walking off with the 5-4 win.
Eastern continues their seven-game road trip Wednesday, April 10, when they head to Ann Arbor, Mich. to take on the No. 12-ranked Wolverines of the University of Michigan. Game time is set for 6 p.m. at the Wilpon Complex.
