Eastern Suffers a Pair of Setbacks at Western Michigan

EMU looks to turn around fortunes at Northern Illinois

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team dropped a pair of Mid-American Conference matchups Friday, April 12, on the road. The Eagles (10-23-1; 1-7 MAC) fell twice to Western Michigan University (13-21; 4-4 MAC) at Ebert Field, 4-3 and 7-2.

Game One

The Eagles fell in the opening game 4-3 and were led by Amanda Stanton (Homer Glen, Ill.-Lockport Township) and Katy Blaharski (Carleton, Mich.-Airport) who each went 2-for-4. Stanton posted her fifth double of the season, while driving in a pair. Nellie Coquillard (Niles, Mich.-Niles) ripped her seventh homer of the 2013 season.

Lindsay Rich (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) made the start for EMU going 4.1 innings. Rich (4-5) was charged with the loss and allowed four runs on nine hits, while punching out a pair and walking three. Lauren Wells (Lowell, Ind.-Lowell) tossed the final 1.2 for the Eagles and allowed just one hit and struck out all five of the outs she earned. Becca Shemberger (7-10) earned the victory for Western, tossing a complete game. She allowed three runs on five hits with eight walks, while striking out nine.

The Eagles took a quick 1-0 lead in the first after striking out in back-to-back at-bats to lead off the game, the Green and White drew a pair of walks to put runners at first and second, bringing Stanton to the plate. Stanton ripped a two-bagger down the right field line to score Amanda Herron (Columbus, Ohio-St. Francis De Sales) from second.

Western return-fired in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs to get up on top, 2-1, after using three hits to score two. Melissa Palmer led off the inning with an infield single and moved up to second on a Christina Pigozzi sacrifice bunt. Palmer later scored on an RBI single from Loren Nagy. Diana Patterson was the second WMU run and scored on an RBI base knock from Caity Pixley.

The Broncos extended their lead to 3-1 in the second inning when Patterson ripped a double down the left field line, scoring Mackenzie Shepeck from second.

Coquillard launched her seventh home run of the 2013 campaign in the top of third. The solo home run brought the Eagles back to within one, 3-2.

Shepeck gave the Broncos a 4-2 lead in the fifth when she single through the left side with bases loaded and one out, scoring Jenny Rohn before Wells struck out the next two batters to get the Eagles out of the inning.

Blaharski led the top of the seventh off with an infield single and moved into scoring position on a groundout by Herron. Stanton singled down the left field line to score Blaharski from second and bring the Eagles to within one. With two outs and a runner at third, the Eagles were unable to cross the plate again, falling by the final tally of 4-3 at Ebert Field.

Game Two

Eastern was able to ramp up the offense a bit in the nightcap of the twinbill, outhitting the Broncos, 7-6,. Herron and Stanton each had a pair of base knocks, with Stanton ripping a pair of doubles. Coquillard and Herron each had an RBI in the loss.

Wells (0-13) took the loss after tossing the first 1.1 innings and surrendering three runs, two earned, on three hits. Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles) went the next 2.2 innings and allowed four runs on three hits, while walking four. Rich was in the circle the final two innings and did not allow a hit. Shepeck (2-5) picked up the victory for WMU after being touched for just two hits in four innings.

Western scored the first three runs of the game. They plated a pair in the first and one more in the second, before EMU came back with two runs in the third. Blaharski led the third off with a single down the left field line and advanced to second on a while pitch. Blaharski later scored on a single up the middle from Herron and in the next at-bat Coquillard drove in a run with a single up the middle, making it 3-2 in favor of the Broncos.

WMU exploded for four runs in the bottom of the fourth to make the final tally of 7-2. After loading the bases on a walk with two outs, Nagy ripped a homer to clear the bases and give Western a five run lead which they held the remainder of the game.

Eastern continues its road trip Saturday, April 13, when they travel to DeKalb, Ill. For a two-game series with the Huskies of Northern Illinois University. Game time is set for 2 p.m. (CT) Saturday afternoon.
