Men’s track and field looks to add more automatic qualifiers to conference championships

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) –  The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team will compete in one final meet before the all-important Mid-American Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Green and White heads south down US-23 to the 28th annual Toledo Invitational at the Fetterman Outdoor Track and Field Facility. The meet begins Thursday, May 2, with the javelin throw at 1 p.m. The final day of action, May 3, starts at 11:00 a.m. with both running and fielding events.

“The Toledo Invitational will serve as a final prep for the MAC Championships for selected individuals,” commented EMU Head Coach John Goodridge.

The Eagles are coming off a busy weekend that included athletes in action at four different meets: Penn Relays, WCU Open, Hillsdale-Gina Relays and the Lyle Bennett Open. At the Penn Relays, April 25, Terefe Ejigu placed 16th in the 10,000-meter run, crossing the finish line in 30:19.74, a time that is currently the second-best in the Mid-American Conference.

EMU two-sport athlete Ryan Brumfield won the long jump at the WCU Open, April 26, with a leap of 22-feet 03.00-inches (6.78 meters) while also taking the bronze in the high jump.

Sophomore Solomon Ijah claimed the decathlon at the Hillsdale-Gina Relays, April 26-27, winning six of the 10 events. Ijah tallied 6,967 points for the fourth-highest decathlon score in EMU history.

To wrap up the weekend, Eastern brought home nine victories at the Lyle Bennett Open, April 27. EMU saw the best overall performance come from team captain, Jay Saunders. The senior sprinter tallied three victories on the afternoon, winning the 100-meter and 200-meter dash in 10.66 and 21.48, respectively. Saunders' time in the 100 was a personal-best and the third-best time in the Mid-American Conference this season. He also teamed with Chris Scott, Cameron Bolton and Matthew Williams to take the 4x100-meter relay in a combined time of 41.07.

This will be the last meet that any Eagles will have a chance to automatically qualify for the MAC Championships in Akron, Ohio, May 9-11. Currently, Eastern has 17 marks that secure spots in the conference championshps.Cameron Bolton, Darrell Butler, Saunders and Grzegorz Kalinowski lead the way for the Green and White with two spots each.
