Eagles Place Sixth at MAC Championships

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team ended its 2013 season, finishing in sixth place at the Mid-American Conference Championships Saturday, March 23 at University Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich. EMU tallied a team score of 193.675 on the afternoon

Central Michigan University and host Western Michigan University finished the meet tied at 194.800 to become MAC co-champions. Kent State University, the regular season MAC champions, placed third (194.775) followed by Northern Illinois University (194.050), Bowling Green State University (193.750), EMU (193.675) and Ball State University (192.500).

Kent State's Marie Case took the all-around competition with a score of 39.250. Second team All-MAC EMU gymnast Khadijah Hudson received a 37.750 from the judges to take 11th in the meet.

The Eagles' other All-MAC Second Team honoree, Anna Willette, led the Green and White in all three events she competed in. The sophomore from Pylesville, Md. finished runner-up on the balance beam, scoring a 9.800. She took ninth on both the vault and the uneven parallel bars, with marks of 9.800 and 9.750, respectively.

On the floor exercise, Hudson tied her career-high with a 9.875 to finish in fifth place. Seniors Amanda Fuller and Kristina Kurkmilis followed with impressive marks of 9.825 in their final meet as EMU gymnasts. The floor proved to be the best event for the Eagles as the team turned in a score of 48.925.

Sophomore Carrina Lo Bello had a career-day, tying her personal bests on the bars and beam, scoring a 9.725 on both rotations. Making her collegiate debut, freshman Nikki Paterson finished in 18th place on the bars with a 9.675. Also competing on the bars for the final time were EMU's other two seniors, Camille Cicchini and Brittany Cassar. Cicchini received a 9.600 from the judges while Cassar recorded a 9.550.

EMU's 2013 campaign comes to a close as the Green and White recorded a higher mark (193.675) at this year's conference championship than it did a season ago (193.150).
