Hendricks Finishes in Top 10 at Zone C Championships

Eagles have eight athletes in West Lafayette this weekend

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University swimming and diving teams had eight members of it diving squads compete in the first day of the 2013 National Collegiate Athletic Association's Zone C Diving Championships Thursday, March 14, at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center on the campus of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Ind.

On the men's side, Jeffrey Craig and Andrew Saunders competed in the one-meter dive.  Craig finished 10th in the one-meter with a 300.75 in the preliminary round, good for 14th in the opening frame, but his 346.05 in the finals propelled him into the top-10. Saunders scored a 294.20 in the preliminary round which was the 16th-best score. A 342.45 in the final round moved him into 13th overall. Sage Stephens and Dakoda Johnson were unable to qualify for the final round as their scores did not rank in the top-18.

The women competed in the three-meter dive at the Boilermaker Aquatic Center, with Kelley Hendricks leading the EMU women. Hendricks took a 268.25 in the preliminary round which was the 18th-best score of anyone competing in the event, just barely qualifying her for the finals round. She came back with an astounding 594.80 in the finals to jettison up to eighth place overall. Melynee Saya earned 16th place on the day with a 268.90, good for 17th, before jumping one spot with a 551.05 in the finals round. Lauren Dark and Danielle Hulvey were unable to qualify for the finals round after not ranking in the top-18 in the preliminary round.

Day two of the Zone C Championships continues Friday, March 15, when the women compete in the one-meter dive, while the men will try their luck on the three-meter boards. Action from Purdue University begins at 1 p.m. Friday afternoon.
