Women's Golf Ties for Third at Rio Verde Invitational

RIO VERDE, Ariz. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team finished in a tie for third place on the final leaderboard Sunday afternoon, March 10, at the 2013 Rio Verde Invitational. On the second and final day of competition the Eagles fired a team score of 306 to finish third in the standings with the University of Arkansas-Little Rock on the par 72, 6,215-yard White Wing Golf Course. EMU's 36-hole total of 601 (295-306) kept them four strokes behind first place Northern Arizona who recorded a final tally of 597.
Leading the way for the Green and White was senior Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada- Westside Secondary School) who carded a four-over-par 76 on the final 18 holes. TheOrangeville, Ontario native finished the two-day tournament at three-over 147 (71-76) to place in a three-way tie for fifth. It marked her fourth career top five showing and Fairbairn's second during the 2012-13 campaign. Her opening round total of 71 was tied for the lowest 18-hole tally of Fairbairn's career, as she notched a 71 in the final round of the Red Rocks Invitational, March 3-4, 2012.
Senior Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) followed Fairbairn, posting a 149 (73-76) for eighth place. Junior Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada-Richmond Hill) was third for the Eagles recording a 78 giving her a two-round score of 154 (76-78). Rounding out the scoring for EMU, junior Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) and redshirt sophomore Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam) had a 155 (75-80) and a 158 (82-76), respectively.
EMU travels to Little Rock, Ark. for the UALR Golf Classic, March 25-26.
