Stellar Pitching Earns Eagles Road Sweep of Cincinnati, 3-0

Paul Schaak and Ryan Lavoie combine for EMU's first shutout of 2013

CINCINNATI, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team capped-off a three-game sweep of the University of Cincinnati, 3-0, in front of 1,140 fans at Marge Schott Stadium Sunday, March 10. Paul Schaak (1-0) and Ryan Lavoie combined to earn the Eagles (6-9) their first shutout of the season.

The Green and White swept a three-game set for the first time since April 6-8, 2012, against Western Michigan University. The three victories also marked the first sweep of a non-conference foe since last season's home-opening weekend, March 16-18, versus Niagara University.

Cincinnati's (4-8) offense was largely shut down by Schaak and Lavoie. Schaak excelled in his first start of the season, going six innings and scattering six hits while fanning five batters. Lavoie earned his first save of 2013 while not allowing a baserunner and striking out a pair over the final three innings.

Lee Longo posted the game-winning, two-RBI hit in the fourth inning on a 1-for-2 afternoon. Jamie Simpson (1-for-3) hit his second homer of the season and registered an RBI for a third-consecutive game. Sam Ott went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Mitchell McGeein and John Rubino were each 1-for-4. Rubino also stole his second base of the season.

Mitch Patishall (0-1) took the loss for the Bearcats after allowing two earned runs in 3.2 innings on the bump. Six different UC players had one hit Sunday, with Ian Happ (1-for-3) providing the only extra-base hit of the game for the Bearcats.

Dae Bowden walked and Ott doubled to begin the fourth inning and set the table for Longo, who singled through the left side to put the Eagles ahead, 2-0. In the bottom of the fourth with runners on first and second and one out, Schaak uncorked a wild pitch to move Jeff Murray to third. Schaak worked his way out of trouble with a pair of strikeouts.

Simpson added EMU's third run in the top of the sixth with one out, when he went yard against Art Warren. Lavoie came on in the seventh and hardly broke a sweat during the final three innings, sending all nine batters he faced down in order.

The Eagles complete their 17-game road trip Tuesday-Wednesday, March 12-13, with a pair of contests against Morehead State University in Morehead, Ky.
