EMU pitching stellar once again in weekend opener
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University baseball team scored the go-ahead run in the 10th inning and held on for a 2-1 victory over Northern Kentucky University at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex Friday, March 15. The Eagles (7-9) won their fourth in just their second extra-innings affair of the season.
EMU loaded the bases in the top of the 10th inning, when Sam Ott used an RBI groundout to plate John Rubino for the winning tally. The Eagles' pitching duo of Neil Butara and Ryan Lavoie (1-2) combined to five-hit a struggling Norse (2-16) squad, which has now lost 10 straight.
Butara turned in a terrific outing on the hill Friday, giving up just one run in the first inning while allowing only five hits. The senior righty fanned three batters and walked a pair over eight innings of work. Lavoie pitched the final two innings and claimed his first victory of the year. He did not allow a hit and struck out one NKU batter. The two hurlers combined for three double plays.
Lee Longo teed off for his first home run of the season on a 1-for-5 afternoon. Leadoff man Daniel Russell went 2-for-4 with a walk, while Ott was 1-for-4 at the dish with his fourth double in as many games. Rubino (1-for-4) and Mitchell McGeein (1-for-3) also notched two-baggers in the game.
Northern Kentucky's Brett Loeding (1-3) was the tough-luck loser, allowing the winning run and pitching 3.1 innings in relief of starter Blake Bagshaw, who tossed 6.2 innings. Offensively, Zac Asman (2-for-4) led the way for the Norse with a pair of doubles.
In the first inning, Asman poked a one-out double to left-center field. He then stole third and eventually scored on an RBI groundout from Brad Clement to make it 1-0 NKU.
EMU tied the contest, 1-1, when Longo played long-ball with one gone in the fourth. NKU threatened to regain the lead in the sixth when Asman doubled for a second time. However, Butara induced a double play off the bat of former Eagle Brett Cisper to end the inning.
Russell reached third base in the eighth inning after singling and advancing on a Nick Rotola base knock, but NKU got a force out at second base for the final out. NKU put the winning run at first base in the bottom of the ninth, but Lavoie got the double-play ball he was looking for to send the game into extra innings.
The Green and White wasted little time tacking on the go-ahead run in the 10th. Rubino led off with a double and Rotola sacrifice bunted him over to third base. After Russell was intentionally walked, Austin Wilson was plunked to load the bases. Ott then stepped up and simply put the ball in play on the infield and allowed Russell to scoot home.
Lavoie sent the Norse down in order in their final at bat and EMU went on to the one-run win and evened up their record to 1-1 in extra-inning contests this year.
The Eagles and Norse will square off once again Saturday, March 16, at noon. EMU will then play Butler at approximately 3:30 p.m.
