Ignowski tosses a complete game in first appearance of the season

ATLANTA, Ga. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team opened the 2013 campaign with a 6-1 victory over the Butler University Bulldogs Friday, Feb. 8. The game was the first game in the 2013 Georgia Tech/Kennesaw State Invitational.

The Eagles (1-0) were led by freshman designated player Abby Davidson (Westerville, Ohio-Olentangy Orange) and senior catcher Courtney Loe (Temperance, Mich.-Bedford (West Liberty)) who each posted multi-hit games. Amanda Stanton (Homer Glen, Ill.-Lockport Township) and Jenn Lucas (Pinckney, Mich.-Pinckney) drove in a pair of runs each, while Nellie Coquillard (Nile, Mich.-Niles) added an RBI of her own. Stanton and Coquillard each blasted their first homers of the 2013 campaign.

Despite walking seven batters and hitting another, Jenna Ignowski (Niles, Mich.-Niles) went the distance in the circle, pitching seven innings. Ignowski (1-0) struck out six Bulldogs, while allowing just one run. Leah Bry (0-1) was charged with the loss for Butler after allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits.

The Green and White opened the scoring in the first innings by notching a pair of runs. Davidson led off the game with a walk and moved into scoring position after Katy Blaharski (Carleton, Mich.-Airport) laid down a sacrifice bunt. Stanton followed Blaharski with a two-run homer to give EMU a 2-0 lead after one inning.

Butler was able to get one run back in the second inning when Ignowski walked Devin Dearing with the bases loaded to make it 2-1.

It was all Eastern through the rest of the game, as they tacked on four runs through the next five innings. EMU put up a three-spot on the top of the fourth. After the first two batters of the inning made outs, the Eagles turned up the offensive pressure. Loe singled through the left side of the infield and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Freshman Mady Hostetler (New Haven, Ind.-Woodlan) roped a double to left center, for her first collegiate hit. Lucas was next to the plate and singled scoring both Hostetler and Myranda Barnes (Ypsilanti, Mich.-Belleville) who ran for Loe when she reached third. The Lucas single made it 4-1 in favor of EMU, but the Eagles were not finished in the fourth. Davidson poked a single in the next at-bat which brought Lucas in to score after the Bulldogs' leftfielder made an error, giving Eastern a 5-1 lead after four innings.

Coquillard launched a homer to right-centerfield in the top of the fifth to give Eastern the final tally of 6-1.

Eastern looks to drop the host of the tournament Friday, Feb. 8, as it takes on Georgia Tech for a 3 p.m. tilt.
