No. 4 EMU downs No. 7 Northern Illinois on tiebreakers in the third place match
DADE CITY, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team took third place at the 2013 Mid-American Match Play Championship at Lake Jovita South Course in Florida. The Eagles bested fifth-seeded Miami University before falling to top-seeded Ball State University. EMU rounded out the event by topping seventh-ranked Northern Illinois University via the tiebreaker in the third-place match.
Junior Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) fell to Griffin Bauman, 3&2, and senior Spencer Slade (Saline, Mich.-Saline-Savannah State) dropped a 1-up decision to put the Eagles in an early hole.
Senior Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Oakland University) stormed backed with a 5&4 victory against Nick Huggins and Josh Heinze (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth) then tied the team score with a 7&5 decision over Shawn Foley. Then Brian Burt (Dimondale, Mich.-Holt) captured a 3&2 win over Matt Gorman before Stuart Grehan (Tullamore, Ireland-Colaiste Choilm) fell to Kurtis Luedtke, 2&1.
Since the match finished in a 3-3 tie, a tiebreaker needed to be employed to determine who advanced. Because EMU won its three matches by a total of 15 holes, compared to NIU winning its two matches by a total of six holes, the Green and White were declared the victor.
In other action, Bowling Green upset Ball State, 3.5-2.5, to win the second-annual event. Toledo knocked off Miami on tiebreakers for fifth place and Akron edged Ohio, 4-2, in the seventh place match.
Schools were competing in teams of six with the seeds determined by their current GolfStat rankings. Each of the six matches was worth one point to the winner. If the competitors end up all-square after 18 holes, each school received a ½ point. The school with the most points after the six matches won.
Unlike stroke play, in which the unit of scoring is the total number of strokes taken over one or more rounds of golf, match play scoring consisted of individual holes won, halved or lost. On each hole, the most that can be gained is one point. Golfers play as normal, counting the strokes taken on a given hole. The golfer with the lowest score on a given hole receives one point. If the golfers tie, then the hole is halved. Also, once a player is "up" more holes than there are holes remaining to play the match is over.

If a team tie still exists, the team winner will be determined by comparing the halved match or matches. These results will be determined by a "scorecard playoff" (sores will be compared by the #1 handicap hole) provided all tied matches have played that hole.
