Ijah Crushes Record at Oiler Opener

FINDLAY, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—Eastern Michigan University's men's track and field team sent five athletes to compete in the Findlay Oiler Opener, Dec. 6-7, and came away from the competition with a 1-2-3 sweep in the men's heptathlon.

Junior Solomon Ijah (Murrieta, Calif.-Murrieta Valley) broke Kevin Lanier's 2011 record of 5224 by nearly 100 points, scoring 5323 points over the course of the two-day event. Ijah won five-of-seven events, as he dominated the 60m dash in 7.10 seconds, sprinted through the 60m hurdles in 8.35 seconds, leapt for a distance of 6.69 meters in the long jump, threw the shot put for 14.30 meters, and cleared 4.40 meters in the pole vault.

The second and third-place finishes came from junior Levi Selvig (Flushing, Mich.-Flushing Community) with 4830 points and sophomore Zach Waldron (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Northview) with 4363 points. Waldron was able to nab another top finish for the Eagles, as he was the only athlete to eclipse the 2-meter mark in the high jump.

The squad is off until Saturday, Jan. 11, 2014, when it will host the EMU Triangular in Bowen Field House.
