Murphy and Williams Lead the Way at The Preview

Eagle duo finish inside the top five, while the team finished in a two-way tie for third

FISHERS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) -- Behind the solid play of junior Sylvie Williams (Christchurch, New Zealand-Christchurch Girls School-Lincoln) and freshman Kelsey Murphy (Plymouth, Mich.-Plymouth), the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team finished in a two-way tie for third place at The Preview hosted by Ball State University with a 36-hole mark of 632 (314-318) Tuesday, Oct. 8, on the par-72 Hawthorns Golf & Country Club course.
Williams and Murphy each fired back-to-back rounds of 76 for a two-day total of 152 in third place, making EMU one of just three teams in the tournament to boast a multiple top 10 finishers. Murphy's top five showing was the first of her career, while it was also the first top five finish of Williams' career to go along with equaling her career low round of 76.
The University of Toledo captured its second tournament title with a 611(304-307) to finish seven-stroke ahead of host BSU (311-307). Eastern Michigan and Eastern Kentucky (323-309=632) tied for third place, while BSU's Jenna Hague claimed a two-shot win over UT's Manisa Isavas.
The event featured eight Mid-American Conference teams in addition to eight programs from outside the league and was played on the same course that will host the MAC Championships in the spring.
Redshirt sophomore Karyn Lee Ping (Brampton, Ontario, Canada-St. Augustine Secondary School) finished the event with a 162 (80-82) for a 31st place tie. Junior Lois Schoof (Amsterdam, Netherlands-Univ. of Amsterdam) fired an 84 in the final round to tie for 32nd place with a 166 (82-84) and senior Usanee Laopattananont (Bangplee, Thailand-Thai Christian School) added a 173 (85-88) for 67th place.
Playing as an individual, freshman Brenna Hammond (West Bloomfield, Mich.-Detroit Mercy) notched a 181 (88-93)to take 85th place in her first collegiate tournament.
Eastern Michigan continues its fall campaign at the Hoosier Fall Invitational, Oct. 19-20, hosted by Indiana at Hickory Stick Golf Course in Greenwood, Ind.
