An EMU soccer player earns the award for the second straight week

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University forward Angela Vultaggio (Chesterfield, Mich.-L'Anse Creuse North) has been named the Mid-American Conference Female Scholar Athlete of the Week for the period ending, Oct. 27. The junior earns her first scholar-athlete of the week honor but collects the third MAC weekly award of her career. Vultaggio's award also makes it back-to-back weeks that someone from the EMU soccer team has been honored as MAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Week. Sophomore Megan McCabe (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) claimed the accolade last week, Oct. 20.

Vultaggio recorded seven points in two games over the weekend, scoring three goals to go along with an assist. The forward scored the lone goal in a 1-1 draw versus Buffalo, Oct. 25, before scoring two goals in EMU's 4-1 win over Akron, Oct. 27. Six of her seven shots attempted throughout the weekend landed on goal while half of them found the back of the net. She got EMU on the scoreboard first against the Bulls with a goal in the 12th minute before the game ended in a draw. With her team trailing, 1-0, against the Zips, Vultaggio tallied the equalizer in the 25th minute, rifling a shot past the Akron keeper to knot the contest up at one goal apiece with 20:18 remaining in the first half. In the second half, the Chesterfield, Mich. native would find teammate Cara Cutaia (Burlington, Ontario-Notre Dame Catholic) for a goal before receiving a pass from Cutaia six minutes later to score her second goal of the game. The three goal weekend gives Vultaggio 23 in her EMU career, placing her fourth all-time in EMU history. The scoring barrage helped put EMU in an opportunity to win its first MAC regular season championship since 2003.

Leading the team in goals (11) and tied for the team high with seven assists, Vultaggio has been on a complete tear as of late, collecting 13 points in the last four games after recording 16 points in EMU's first 14 games of the season. Her goal and point totals are tied for the fourth most ever in one season  at EMU. Aside from her success on the soccer field, Vultaggio also shines in the classroom as a communications major, boasting a GPA of 3.51.

Vultaggio and the Eagles will close out their 2013 regular season with the MAC regular season crown at stake. EMU heads to Kalamazoo, Mich. to face Western Michigan University in a Halloween matchup, Oct. 31, at 3 p.m. Following the regular season finale, Eastern will host a MAC Tournament quarterfinal contest Sunday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m. against a team to be determined. Cost of admission to get into the MAC Tournament contest at Scicluna Field is $5; however, EMU students will be permitted in free with a valid student ID.
