KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)
– In a cross divisional showdown against the leader of the Mid-American Conference East Division, the Eastern Michigan University soccer team scored a pair of second half goals while holding Kent State University scoreless for a 2-0 victory Sunday afternoon, Oct. 20, at Zoeller Field. With the win, the Eagles (9-6-1, 6-2-0 MAC) have officially secured a spot in the MAC Tournament.

EMU sophomore goalkeeper Megan McCabe (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) (9-6-1) not only defensively assisted the Eagles in the weekend sweep, but she also recorded her third consecutive shutout away from the friendly confines of Scicluna Field. The Arlington Heights, Ill. native stopped all five shots on goal that the Golden Flashes (10-6-0, 5-3-0 MAC) sent her direction. On the other side of the pitch, Kent State goalie Stephanie Senn (10-6-0) also made five saves, but allowed two EMU goals in the contest's 90 minutes.

Angela Vultaggio (Chesterfield, Mich.- L'Anse Creuse North) was a factor in the Eagles' scoring all afternoon, recording three points via an assist as well as a goal. Bianca Rossi (Mississauga, Ontario-St. Marcellinus) put the Green and White on the board first with her goal in the 58th minute.

Kent State outshot EMU, 19-15, but the Eagles sent more shots on goal, tallying seven shots on target compared to just five for the Golden Flashes. Head Coach Scott Hall's group also held the advantage on corner kicks, 7-3.

After the first 45 minutes, the game remained scoreless as both teams fired seven shots, including two on goal that were stopped by each goalkeeper. The Eagles had opportunities to score with six corner kicks, but they were unable to capitalize. However, EMU only allowed the Golden Flashes to attempt one corner kick throughout the entire first half.

With 32:45 left in regulation, Vultaggio and Cara Cutaia (Burlington, Ontario-Notre Dame Catholic) made a pair of sharp passes to find Rossi in the middle of the box. The veteran forward knew exactly what to do with a great scoring opportunity, blasting a shot high into the upper left corner of the net to give Eastern a 1-0 lead.

EMU had another scoring opportunity in the 80th minute as KSU's Morgan Mah was issued a red card, giving Vultaggio a penalty kick attempt. Senn stepped up to block the penalty kick, but Vultaggio followed her shot to send the rebound past the KSU goalie and double the Eagles' advantage, 2-0. Eastern controlled the remainder of the contest, preventing the Golden Flashes from even getting a shot off as the Eagles earned their sixth MAC victory of the season.

The Green and White return to Scicluna Field for its final homestand of the regular season. EMU hosts the University at Buffalo Friday, Oct. 25, at 3 p.m. before the University of Akron comes to town for Senior Day, Oct. 27, in which the five senior Eagles will be recognized in their final regular season contest.
