Vultaggio scores the lone EMU goal in Eagles' first draw of MAC play

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University soccer team and the University at Buffalo Bulls played to a, 1-1, draw Friday afternoon, Oct. 25, at Scicluna Field. The Eagles (9-6-2, 6-2-1 MAC) scored in the first half while Buffalo (5-8-3, 2-6-1 MAC) tied the game up in the second, and neither team could find the golden goal in two overtimes as the contest resulted in EMU's first draw of MAC play.

Junior Angela Vultaggio (Chesterfield, Mich.-L'Anse Creuse North) scored the lone goal for the Green and White on an assist from senior Stephanie Clarke (London, Ontario-St. Thomas Aquinas). In goal for the Eagles, sophomore Megan McCabe (Arlington Heights, Ill.-Prospect) (9-6-2) made five saves on the afternoon.

Megan Giesen knotted the contest up with a goal for the Bulls in the 50th minute. UB goalkeeper Ainsley Wheldon matched McCabe, stopping five shots as well. EMU outshot Buffalo, 14-12, through the game's 110 minutes.

Eastern controlled the contest early, notching the first mark on the scoreboard in the 12th minute. Vultaggio, from the right side of the box, used a cross from Clarke to send a header past Wheldon and put the Eagles up, 1-0, with 33:14 remaining in the first half.

The Bulls tried to counter with a goal of their own six minutes later. Buffalo's leading scorer, Karen McMahon, blasted a shot towards McCabe; however, the reigning MAC Defensive Player of the Week made the stop to hold on to the one-goal advantage. EMU would continue to keep UB scoreless, taking its 1-0 lead into the break after 45 minutes of play.

Buffalo managed to tie things up after taking advantage of its best scoring opportunity of the contest. Off a corner kick in the 50th minute, Sophie Therien found Jackie Hall in the box, but McCabe deflected the shot away. Nonetheless, Giesen corralled the rebound and scored past the sophomore goalkeeper, making it 1-1, early in the second half. The score would remain that way until the horn sounded to force overtime.

Nearly two minutes into the first overtime, Vultaggio tried to win the game for Eastern but was denied by Wheldon. Neither team would get another good scoring opportunity as the contest ended tied at one goal apiece.

The Eagles will host Akron in its final home game of the 2013 regular season Sunday, Oct. 27, at 1 p.m. It will be Senior Day as Clarke, Cara Cutaia (Burlington, Ontario-Notre Dame Catholic), Allison Kaim (Palos Hills, Ill.-AA Stagg), Emily Kowalzyk (Tinley Park, Ill.-Victor J.), Megan Pedro (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Canterbury) will be recognized during halftime for their careers at EMU.
