Women's Cross Country Strives for Strong Team Effort in Indiana

Green and White will compete in the NCAA Pre-National Invitational, Oct. 19
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University's women's cross country team will compete in the NCAA Pre-National Invitational in Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday, Oct. 19. The Eagles will have seven runners in the 6,000-meter White Race and two in the 6,000-meter Open Race.
Indiana State University's LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course is not only the site of the upcoming meet but also the venue for the 2013 NCAA National Championships on Nov. 23.
The White Race, with a field of 35 competing schools, includes 11 institutions that are ranked in the top-15 of their respective regions. Additionally, the Green and White will have the opportunity to face six teams from its own Great Lakes Region, including Mid-American Conference opponents University of Akron and Bowling Green State University.
Head Coach Sue Parks is hoping to see a strong showing from her squad and an improvement from previous meets this season. "We did not run well as a team at Notre Dame and we really need to turn things around this weekend," explained Coach Parks. "We have been striving to close the gap between our first through fifth scorers and we hope to make some progress in Terre Haute. Everyone is healthy again and training has gone well, but we really need to put it all together in a race."
The Eagles have just two weeks until the MAC Championships on Nov. 2. "It is time for a good team effort before the MAC meet," added Parks. "Victoria Voronko (Stavropol, Russia-School #42) should be one of the frontrunners in this race and she will face the only two athletes who have defeated her so far this season. It will be exciting to see what she can do."
The White Race is scheduled for a 12:55 p.m. start and the Open Race will follow shortly after at 2:10 p.m. Live splits and results will be available through www.branchsportstech.com.
