EMU welcomes MAC foes Akron and Buffalo to begin 2013 calendar year
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team races into the New Year at home, hosting the University of Akron and the University at Buffalo Friday, Jan. 11, for the EMU Triangular. The action begins inside Bowen Field House with field events at 4 p.m. followed by running events at 6 p.m. Admission is free to the public.
“A lot of university programs have gotten away from scored team competitions which have been a part of our rich history, so I am very happy to have Akron and Buffalo join us in historic Bowen Field House,” said EMU men's track and field Head Coach John Goodridge. “Coach Dennis Mitchell and Coach Perry Jenkins obviously share my philosophy, so we are all looking forward to a spirited event. “
EMU kicked off the 2012-13 campaign on a winning note with a victory at the Eagle Holiday Meet, Dec. 7. Winning 12-of-14 events, the men's team outlasted Central Michigan and Oakland, scoring 140 points while the Chippewas and the Golden Grizzlies scored 90 points and 59 points, respectively. The big highlight of the evening came from NCAA qualifier Donald Scott. Scott started his year off on the right foot by setting a new EMU record in the triple jump with a 15.58-meter leap to take top honors. Scott eclipsed the previous record of 15.50 meters set by Will Harber in 1991.
Mid-American conference foes, Akron and Buffalo, both begin their season in Ypsilanti. The EMU Triangular will help teams get accustomed to Bob Parks Track as the historic venue is the site of this year's MAC Indoor Championships, Feb. 22-23.
Scouting the Zips: The Zips enter Bowen Field House having won the MAC Indoor Championships the previous two seasons. Akron returns numerous individual indoor MAC champions such as the MAC Most Outstanding Field Performer Daryl Baptiste as the Zips look to capture their third straight MAC Indoor Championship this season. National high school pole vault record holder Shawn Barber enters as an incoming freshman for Akron.
Scouting the Bulls: Multis senior Tomarris Bell will lead Buffalo in the 2013 season after earning second team All-MAC accolades a season ago. Last year, the Bulls took fifth place at the MAC Indoor Championships.
