Eagles Protect Bowen Field House, Winning EMU Triangular

EMU wins seven events, and Max Babits sets school record in pole vault

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Winning 7-of-14 events, the Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team defeated both the University of Akron and the University at Buffalo in the EMU Triangular at Bowen Field House, Friday Jan. 11.
The victorious Eagles scored 113 points while Akron finished close behind with 109 points, followed by 77 points from Buffalo.
Senior team co-captain Jay Saunders raced to victories in the 60-meter dash and the 200-meter dash with times of 6.93 and 22.18, respectively. In the 200-meter dash, Chris Scott finished closely behind in 22.72, good enough for second place.
Another Eagle securing two wins on the night was distance-runner Terefe Ejigu. The Wellington, New Zealand native took top honors in the One-Mile race with a 4:18.38 as teammate Ian Hanke ran second in 4:21.54. Ejigu also raced in 8:28.76 to take first in the 3000-meter race.
The EMU 4x400-meter relay team of Matthew Williams, Jeff Elam, Tyler Ross and Jason Ervin finished ahead of the pack with a time of 3:20.90.
The Green and White secured two victories in the field events. Solomon Ijah leaped 6.98 meters (22-feet, 11-iches) to win the long jump. After setting a new EMU record in the triple jump at the Eagle Holiday Meet, Dec. 7, Donald Scott went 2-for-2 on the season in the triple jump, winning with a jump of 14.86 meters (48-feet, 9-inches).
Speaking of setting EMU records, Max Babits broke the school record with a 5.29-meter (17-feet, 4.25-inches) vault. However, Babits' record placed him in the runner-up position on the evening as Akron freshman Shawn Barber's 5.60-meter (18-feet, 4.50-inches) leap established a new Bowen Field House record for first place in the event.
Following victories at a pair of scored tri-meets to open the season, the Eagles will travel to Ann Arbor, Jan. 19, to compete in the Harvey-Simmons Invitational.
