Men’s Track and Field events begin in Ann Arbor at 10:30 a.m. on Jan. 19
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team will stay in Washtenaw County, but hit the road for the first time in the 2012-13 campaign. The Eagles will compete in the Simmons-Harvey Invitational, Saturday Jan. 19, at the University of Michigan Indoor Track Building with action beginning at 10:30 a.m. The Green and White will face competition from the University of Detroit-Mercy, Central Michigan University and host school, University of Michigan.
“This has been a hard training week for us as last week we really only had three days of practice having returned to campus on Monday from the semester break and Friday competition,” noted EMU Head Coach John Goodridge. “We will be using the Simmons-Harvey Invite as an extension of our training.”
This will be the EMU's first meet away from the friendly confines of Bowen Field House and Bob Parks Track, a place where they found success earlier this season. As the host of the Eagle Holiday Meet and the EMU Triangular, the Green and White came away victorious in both scored competitions.
Team captain Jay Saunders will lead the Eagles into Ann Arbor on Saturday after being named Mid-American Conference Men's Track Athlete of the Week for the week of Jan. 14. Saunders' time of 6.93 seconds was good enough for a victory in the 60-meter dash, and he also took the 200-meter dash in 22.18 seconds.
Donald Scott will look to keep his solid season going after taking the triple jump in both meets this season including a new EMU record 15.58-meter (51-feet, 01.50-inches) leap at the Eagle Holiday Meet, Dec. 7. Max Babits also will compete for the first time as the Eastern's pole vault record holder, setting the new record at the EMU Triangular with a vault of 5.29 meters (17-feet, 4.25-inches). Following a wealth of strong individual performances that including a pair of record-breaking performances, the Eagles will look to continue the hot start.
