EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University senior Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada-Westside Secondary School) put together an impressive start to the 2012-13 campaign Saturday, Sept. 15, firing an opening-day total of 150 (75-75) at the Mary Fossum Invitational on the Forest Akers West Golf Course. Fairbairn tallied four birdies on the day to sit in a tie for 20th place after 36 holes.

The Eagles as a team stand in 10th place at 620 (311-309), one shot behind the University of Michigan. Purdue University paces the 17-team field at 578 (288-290), while host Michigan State University stands in second place at 586 (297-289).

Junior Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada -Richmond Hill) is tied for 37th place with a 155 (76-79). Senior Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) carded rounds of 81 and 76 to sit tied for 50th place. Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) and Usanee Laopattananont (Bangplee, Thailand-Thai Christian School) rounded out the EMU lineup with 157 (79-79) and a 186 (94-92), respectively.

Texas State's Krista Puisitem, Purdue's Paula Reto, and PU's Kishi Sinha sit in a three-way tie atop the 92-player field by a stroke at 142.

The second and final day of the Mary Fossum Invitational will take place Sunday, Sept. 16.
