ZIONSVILLE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team kicked off its 2012-13 season Saturday, Sept. 16, at the Wolf Run Intercollegiate at the Wolf Run Golf Club. The Eagles reside in ninth place with a two-round score of 591 (294-297), as Ohio State leads the tournament after rounds of 285 and 281 for a 36-hole mark of 566.
Making his return to the Eagles after a couple years away from the program, senior Spencer Slade (Saline, Mich.-Saline-Savannah State) is just three strokes off the lead following rounds of 66 and 72. His opening round 66 was an EMU career-best and it marks the first time since 2011 that an Eagle has posted a round of 66-or-better. The last EMU student-athlete to record the feat was Casey Olsen, who notched a 66 in the second round of the Windon Memorial, Oct. 16, 2011.
Indiana's Brant Peaper and and OSU's Boo Timko are tied for the individual lead at seven-under par 135.
Junior Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) is tied for 40th place with a 149 (78-71), while senior Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos) will start Sunday tied for 47th place with a 150 (74-76).
Sophomore Brian Burt (Dimondale, Mich.-Holt) shot a 154 (76-78) to tie for 62nd place, while senior Brad Altenhoff (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-White Oaks Secondary) finished the day tied for 79th with a 165 (85-80)
Competitors will resume play at 8:30 p.m. Sunday morning.
