EAST LANSING, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's cross country team opened up the 2012 season Friday afternoon, Sept. 14, at the 32nd Annual Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State University. Senior Terefe Ejigu won the event over a field of 317 competitors for a second straight year with a time of 24:28.
Ejigu maintained a 4:56 pace at the meet and crossed the finish line 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Also placing in the top 10 for EMU was sophomore Daryl Smith, who captured sixth place with a time of 25:01.
"This initial competition served as an evaluation of our summer conditioning phase and the beginning of our in-season training. I'm pleased by our effort," Head Coach John Goodridge said. "Ejigu ran a very controlled effort. I was very impressed with his poise as well as Smith's, as both raced near the front from the start."
The Eagles placed a trio of additional runners in the top 50. Junior Harry Dixon claimed 21st spot (25:25), while redshirt sophomore Warren Witchell took 45th (25:48) and freshman Willy Fink placed 49th (25:49) in his first collegiate competition.
"Dixon ran a very conservative race tactically moving thru the field," Goodridge added. "Witchell's effort, result and number four scorer for us is very encouraging. A small school soccer player he is a novice cross country runner with a lot of heart. I'm also very pleased with the freshmen debuts of Fink and (Austin) Lane. We are all looking forward to beginning our race preparation training."
No team scores were recorded at the event.
Eastern Michigan is back in action Friday, Sept. 21, at the University of Toledo Invitational. The race begins at 5 p.m.
