EYEING THE EMU RECORD BOOK: Senior outside hitter Rachel Iaquaniello is looking to become one of the most storied players in Eastern Michigan volleyball history during the 2012 campaign.
The two-time first team All-MAC selection is looking to become just the second three-time first-team nominee in Eastern's history. The only other EMU volleyballer to wear that crown is Roxanne Munch, who did so from 1987-1989. Iaquaniello earned her first-team honors in both the 2010 and 2011 campaigns.
Since donning the Green and White on the outside for Eastern, the Plymouth, Mich. native has recorded 1,474 kills, which ranks second all-time in EMU laurels. Iaquaniello averaged 465 kills per season in her first three and looks to break Munch's record of 1,537 kills which was set 23 years ago in 1989. Iaquaniello also sits second all-time in the career record book with 4,285 attack attempts. She is averaged 1,363 attacksin her first three seasons and needs 171 to tie Jennifer Nighswander who had 4,456 in her career at Eastern.
IAQUANIELLO NAMED MAC WEST OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Eastern Michigan University volleyball standout Rachel Iaquaniello was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Offensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday, Aug. 27. This is the first time Iaquaniello was honored by the MAC this season and the fourth time in her career.
Iaquaniello led the Eagles to a perfect 4-0 start on the season after going undefeated at the 2012 Memphis Invitational. She averaged 13.75 kills per match, including 17-kill performances in each of the first two matches this season. The senior posted a .254 attack percentage en route to being named the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. She also averaged 4.43 point per set in the opening four matches.
MASTADON PROBLEMS?: Despite holding a 6-7 record against IPFW, the Eagles have struggled in recent history against the foe from Fort Wayne, Ind. Eastern has dropped the last six matches with the Mastadons over the last six seasons. The last win for the Green and White over IPFW came back in 2005, when it won in five sets, Oct. 18.
FILLING IN NICELY: The Eagles lost a pair of first team All-MAC award winners from last season, but have had a trio of student-athletes fill-in those positions as if they were senior leaders. Haley Stein departed last season after recording 645 digs in the 2011 campaign. Through the first five games of last season Stein had notched 110 digs with a 4-1 record. Freshman Sierra Reed has helped the EMU defense to a 4-1 record as well, while posting 94 digs in her first five collegiate matches.
At the setter position, Eastern lost former All-MAC performer Ashley Mason who recorded 1,243 assists last season. In the first five matches of 2011, Mason was averaging 10.67 assists per set, with 192. Freshman Alyssa Davis and junior Kim Hildreth have split time as the Eagles' setters, who have posted an average of 11.11 assists per set with 211 assists on the season.
OFFENSIVE UPGRADE: Eastern Michigan has seen an upgrade in its offensive production compared to the 2011 campaign. Through its first five matches last season, the Eagles were hitting just .193 (245-101-747), while they have posted a .230 attack percentage (264-96-730) in 2012.
Senior Kristen Baker has provided an offensive output unlike any through her first five games of the year to this point. Last year through five matches she was hitting just .255 (38-12-102), while she has posted a .328 attack percentage (56-15-125) this year.
The Eagles have improved their serving significantly in 2012 as well. Already posting 32 aces this season, they have over twice as many aces than they did after five matches in 2011.
