Complete Release (.pdf)
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – With the season-opening homestand complete, the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team hits the road for the first time this season for a pair of games in San Antonio, Texas. UTSA will host the Eagles Friday, Aug. 31, before EMU and Lamar hook up for a neutral-site contest Sunday, Sept. 2. Friday's game will begin at 7 p.m. CST, while Sunday's contest is slated for a 10 a.m. CST kickoff.
MEET AND GREET: The Eagles have traveled to many states in their 18 years of existence, even making it as far as Hawaii in 2005 where they squared off against the Warriors. However, the Green and White has never made it to the Lone Star State until this weekend, when the squad plays a pair in San Antonio. In fact, EMU has never even taken on a team from Texas until this year.
The UTSA Roadrunners hail from the Western Athletic Conference and hold an 0-3-0 record which includes a loss to No. 12-ranked Texas A&M. The Lamar Cardinals play in the Southland Conference and enters the weekend with a mark of 1-2-0.
ROAD WARRIORS: Head Coach Scott Hall's Eagles will play nine road matches this season. Two of those games will be played in the state of Texas, with three more in Ohio and single games in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and New York.
Last season, the Eagles were just 1-9-1 in road matches, with the lone win coming in a 1-0 shutout against Northern Illinois in DeKalb, Ill., Oct. 14.
ALL-TIME IN ROAD OPENERS: In their first road game of the season, the Eagles hold an all-time record of 8-5-4. EMU's first road game occurred on Sept. 22, 1995, when Toledo walked away 1-0 winners.
Last season, the Eagles went into Pittsburgh and earned a 2-2 tie. Cara Cutaia scored the game-tying goal with 10 seconds remaining in regulation.
FEELS LIKE THE FIRST TIME: EMU's three-game homestand ended on a positive note as the Eagles knocked off the Butler Bulldogs, 1-0, Sunday, Aug. 26, at Scicluna Field. After coming so close in the game against Oakland, freshman Sarah Deakin netted her first-career goal, the game-winning tally, in the 65th minute of play. Sophomore Angela Vultaggio and senior Jessica Thomas added assists on the goal.
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Jenna O'Dell notched her first collegiate shutout and victory as well as her first at EMU since transfering from Iowa State University last season. O'Dell made 10 saves and has now stopped 24-of-29 (.828) shots faced over her first three games. For the Eagles, it was their first shutout since blanking Northern Illinois University, 1-0, Oct. 14, 2011.
TWO-WAY STREET: Senior defender Jessica Thomas propelled herself into third on the team in points (three) with an assist against Butler. The Calgary, Alberta native now has four-career points, having also registered an assist in the 2010 campaign.
IN THE CLUTCH: Sarah Deakin's goal Sunday against Butler was not only the first tally of her career, but also her first game-winner. Deakin still has eight more match-clinching markers to score, however, if she wants to tie EMU's all-time leader in that category, as Ashley Rodrigues accomplished the feat nine times from 2007-2009.
Junior Stephanie Clarke has two game-winners in her career and represents the only other Eagle on the 2012 squad to have more than one.
COME ON BACK: Fans will not have to wait long to see their favorite soccer team back in action at Scicluna Field. The Green and White are back home to host IUPUI Friday, Sept. 7, at 4 p.m. After a Sept. 9 trip to Michigan State, Eastern Michigan wraps up non-conference action with a Thursday, Sept. 13, tilt against Detroit at 4 p.m.
In addition to the those two home games, EMU will play five Mid-American Conference matches in Ypsilanti.
CENTURY MARK: With 18 points (five goals, eight assists) through three games this season, the Eagles are on pace to finish with 113. That total would surpass the team's 2008 total of 111 and would mark the first time since that year that the Green and White has racked up more than 100 points in a single season.
THE FACILITATOR: With an assist against Oakland, junior Stephanie Clarke moved into second place on the EMU all-time list for assists per game at a 0.24 clip. Clarke has 10 career assists and 20 points over 42 games played. In 2010, the London, Ontario native scored four goals and added six helpers for 14 points.
Stephanie Janssens leads the way in the assists-per-game category with a 0.28 average over 81 contests from 2007-10.
