Eagles Fall to Roadrunners in Game One of UTSA Classic, 2-1

Stephanie Clarke scores in the 13th minute for EMU

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team fell, 2-1, to the University of Texas San Antonio Friday evening, Aug. 31, in the first of two matches at the UTSA Classic. Junior Stephanie Clarke put the Eagles (1-2-1) on the board early, but the Roadrunners (1-3-0) scored two quick goals to begin the second half and held on for their first win.

For the third time in four games, the Eagles raced out to a 1-0 lead within the first 15 minutes when Clarke notched her sixth-career tally in the 13th minute from junior Cara Cutaia and Marisa Kozikowski. Clarke kicked home her first goal of the season off a crossing pass at the top of the six-yard box. Kozikowski's helper was also the sophomore's first-career point.

EMU remained dangerous over the next 10 minutes as Cutaia mounted a pair of quality scoring chances with the second resulting in a shot off the crossbar in the 21st minute.

Despite several additional scoring chances for both teams in the opening 45 minutes, neither side was able to get many shots on goal as the total was two apiece headed into the break.

UTSA needed just 45 seconds following halftime to net the equalizer as Maria Rojas stuffed a shot home from inside six yards. Anka Grotle was credited with an assist on the play. Rojas struck again in the 51st minute to put the Roadrunners in the lead, 2-1, when she broke in one-on-one with redshirt freshman Jenna O'Dell and banked a shot off the right goalpost and in.

The Green and White applied some offensive pressure beginning in the 71st minute when UTSA goalkeeper Katrina Pus made a save on a header by sophomore Martha Stevens. Pus then denied shots from senior Jessica Thomas and sophomore Angela Vultaggio to keep the Eagles behind by a goal.

Vultaggio's chance in the 78th minute would prove to be the Eagles' final opportunity to tie the contest as both teams were held without a shot for the remaining 12 minutes.

The Eagles wrap up play at the UTSA Classic Sunday morning, Sept. 2, with a game against Lamar University in San Antonio. Match time is set for 10 a.m. CST.
