Rossi scores the game winner as EMU finishes 1-1 in San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO, Texas (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team jumped out to a three-goal edge and never looked back in a 3-1 win over Lamar University in the final match of the UTSA Classic Sunday, Sept. 2. The Eagles (2-2-1) won their first road game of the season against a Cardinals team which fell to 1-4.
Sophomore Bianca Rossi netted the game-winning tally in the 38th minute for her third goal of the season. Junior Cara Cutaia opened the scoring in the 20th minute with her first goal and freshman Sarah Deakin added her second of the 2012 campaign in the 65th minute.
Rossi and Cutaia each turned in three-point performances with an assist apiece in addition to their goals. Sophomore Marisa Kozikowski recorded an assist for a second straight contest and sophomore Angela Vultaggio along with junior Allison Kaim were also credited with helpers.
In goal, redshirt freshman Jenna O'Dell stopped six-of-seven Cardinals shots en route to her second win of the year. The Eagles put three of their seven shots on goal past Lamar goalkeeper Elizabeth Silas.
The Eagles' first scoring chance of the game resulted in the contest's first goal as Cutaia one-timed a shot from the left side of the penalty area past Silas for a 1-0 lead.
Lamar had a chance to tie the game in the 37th minute, when Stefanie Miroballi headed a ball off a corner kick toward the goal. Miroballi's chance was hauled in by O'Dell and the Eagles rushed downfield. On the ensuing play, Kozikowski used a well-placed cross to find Rossi, whose header from 17 yards out reached the back of the net to put EMU ahead, 2-0.
Deakin took the field in the 63rd minute as a substitution for Rossi. The true freshman needed just over two minutes to make her mark as she one-timed a shot from the left side into the goal to give the Eagles a commanding 3-0 advantage.
Kristin Bos' goal for the Cardinals in the 66th minute ended O'Dell's bid for a second shutout, but the EMU goalkeeper made two more saves over the final 20 minutes to preserve a two-goal victory.
Eastern Michigan returns home to host IUPUI Friday afternoon, Sept. 7, at Scicluna Field. Game time is slated for 4 p.m.
