Fairbairn/Kwon Finish Eighth at Pure Silk Championship

POWELL, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) -- Eastern Michigan University women's golfers Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada-Westside Secondary School) and Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada-Richmond Hill) finished tied for eighth place out of 54 collegiate teams for the Pure Silk Women's Collegiate Team Championship, July 31-Aug. 2. The event held at at Wedgewood Golf and Country Club in Powell, Ohio was presented by the National Golf Coaches Association (NGCA).
The Eagle duo played 54 holes during the championship, which featured an alternate-shot format on the first day, better-ball play on day two, and aggregate scoring on the final day as each player played her own ball. During the opening day, the duo carded a 77 followed up with a 67 on day two. In the stroke play round, Kwon finished with an even-par 72 while Fairbairn managed a four-over 76 for a cumulative score of 142.
The pairing of A.J. Newell and Erica Popson from the University of Tennessee took home the tournament championship with a three-day mark of 286 (78-64-144). The University of South Carolina's Meredith Swanson/ Samantha Swinehart finished one stroke back at 287 (72-66-149).. Tied for third place were the teams of Amy Meier and Rachel Rohanna of The Ohio State University and Kristi Cardwell and Shelby Phillips of the University of Iowa, both finishing two shots off the pace.
In the Division II competition, St. Edward's University's Ryanne Haddow and Wallis Spears were victorious with a three day total of 307. In Division III/NAIA, the Ithaca College team of Kelsey Baker and Sharon Li finished at 304 capturing that title.
Fairbairn and Kwon were one of four Mid-American Conference two-player teams in the field. Other MAC schools participating at the event included: Bowling Green's Bailey Arnold/Shelby Wilson, Ohio's Kristen Helmsdoerfer/Julie Lechner and Toledo's Lauren Stephens/Stephanie St-Jean.
