Eric Alejandro qualified for the 400-meter hurdles this summer

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —
The Eastern Michigan University men's track and field team will have a former member of the squad head to the 2012 London Olympics as Eric Alejandro has qualified in the 400-meter hurdles and will be competing for his native Puerto Rico.

Alejandro, who holds the EMU indoor record for the 200-meter high hurdles, qualified for the 2012 games in late-May. Alejandro completed a qualifying race for the 400-meter hurdles in 49.48, two-hundreths of a second faster than the Olympic Qualifying Standard.

The opening ceremony for the 2012 London Olympics is scheduled for Friday, July 27, and will last until Sunday, Aug. 12. As for the 400-meter hurdles, the first round is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 3. The semifinal round will be Saturday, Aug. 4, and the final round is set for Monday, Aug. 6.

EMU has had a track representative at the summer Olympic Games since Hayes Jones in 1960. The Eagles have had 17 representatives in 52 years, 14 men and three women.
