UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team concluded the 36th Annual Rutherford Intercollegiate at the 7,202-yard, par-71 Penn State Blue Course in sixth place with a team-total of 921 (313-308-300) Sunday, April 8.
After finishing out round two early Sunday morning, the 14-team field was set for the slated 10 a.m. shotgun start for the final round. At the end of the round, Mid-American Conference rival Bowling Green State University was crowned the tournament champion with a three-round score of 901 (303-297-301). The Falcons finished 19 strokes ahead of host Penn State University.
Senior Derek East (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada-St. Paul's-University of New Orleans) posted the best individual score for the Green and White. With a 226 (77-73-76) total, East finished tied for seventh place, just seven strokes behind IUP's Brad Boyle who clinched the individual title. It marked the first top 10 finish for the Manitoba, Canada native in 12 career events for EMU.
Freshman John Chaney (Shaker Heights, Ohio-Gimour Academy) followed in a tie for 21st place with a two-day mark of 231 (77-77-77). Sophomore Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) posted a 232 (81-75-76) for 26th place and junior Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Oakland University) was 33rd with a 235 (79-85-71). Rounding out the lineup, freshman Brian Burt (Dimondale, Mich.-Holt) and Tommy Conway (Jackson, Mich.-Lumen Christi) tied for 55th and 66th, respectively.
The Eagles, who moved up to 116th nationally in the latest GolfWeek/Sagarin Performance Index, will practice for a few days and will head back out into competition, April 14-15, at the Robert Kepler Intercollegiate in Columbus, Ohio.
