SUGAR GROVE, Ill.(EMUEagles.com) – With 36 holes in the books at the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championship, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team sits in second place with a 594 (297-297). Kent State University leads the way after posting a 12-under par 594 (283-281) on the par 72, 6,978 yard Rich Harvest Farms course.
The Golden Flashes hold a 30-stroke lead heading into day two, that total includes holding down three of the tournament's top five slots. EMU is in second place followed by Bowling Green (596), Toledo (600), Akron (605), Ball State (607), Northern Illinois (607), Ohio (609) and Miami (613).
Four of the five Eagles are ranked in the top 27, included sophomore Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) who is tied for sixth place with a one-over par 145 (72-73). Senior Derek East (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada-St. Paul's-University of New Orleans) notched a 146 (72-74) for eighth place. Junior Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Oakland University) is tied for 14th with a 149 (78-71) and freshman Brian Burt (Dimondale, Mich.-Holt) is tied for 27th with a 155 (76-79). Rounding out the EMU lineup, senior Zach MacDougal (Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada-Centennial) fired rounds of 77 and 91 for 45th place.
KSU's Corey Conners leads the field with a seven-under 137 (70-67).
