Men's Golf Looks to Take Back the MAC Championship Crown

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team will compete at the 2012 Mid-American Conference Championship Friday through Sunday, May 4-6, at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. The three-day, 72-hole event, will be played at 7,601 yards and to a par-72 for the nine MAC schools which sponsor men's golf – Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami, Northern Illinois, Ohio and Toledo.
The tournament, which is hosted by Northern Illinois University, will feature 36 holes Friday, 18 holes Saturday and the final 18 holes Sunday. The event is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. each day. The tournament is open to the public and admission is free.
Rich Harvest Farms is a private, 18-hole, 1,800-acre golf course and country club that wad built in 1989 and expanded in 1999. Owned by Northern Illinois University graduate Jerry Rich, Rich Harvest Farms hosted the 2007 NCAA Central Regional Men's Golf Championships and was the 2009 site of the Solheim Cup USA v. Europe matches. In 1999, it was named the fifth-best new private course in the U.S. by Golf Digest. In 2003, the course made its debut on that magazine's list of Top 100 American Golf Courses.
Despite firing a final round 302, EMU finished in third place at the 2011 MAC Championship with a cumulative score of 1,198 (297-300-299-302). Kent State University captured its third consecutive league title, finishing at one-under par 1,151 (292-275-292-292) on the par 72, 7,180 yard TPC River's Bend course in Mainville, Ohio.
Nick Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) finished in a tie for fifth place with a six-over 294 (71-75-71-77) while Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) placed 10th with a 299 (74-76-71-78).
Kent State's Mackenzie Hughes claimed individual medalist honors with a four-under 284 (70-67-73-74) earning him a two shot victory over teammate John Hahn as the Golden Flashes had four players finish in the top 10.
The winner will receive the MAC's automatic bid to one of six NCAA Regional sites May 17-19. The 2012 regional sites are: The Club at Olde Stone (Bowling Green, Ky.), The Grandover Resort (Greensboro, N.C.), the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club (Norman, Okla.), The University of Georgia Golf Course (Athens, Ga.), the University of Michigan Golf Course (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and the Stanford Golf Course (Stanford, Calif.).
