Warner and Fairbairn Lead the Way at Hoya Invitational

BEALLSVILLE, Md. (EMUEagles.com) -- Behind the solid play of senior Shannon Warner (Livonia, Mich.-Livonia Churchill-Michigan State) and junior Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada-Westside Secondary School), the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team finished in a three-way tie for second place at the Hoya Invitational with a 54-hole mark of 947 (325-314-308) Tuesday, April 3, here on the par-72 Members Club at Four Streams course.
Warner finished in fifth place with a 232 (80-75-77) and Fairbairn took sixth with a 234 (83-75-76), making EMU one of just three teams in the tournament to boast a pair of top 10 finishers. Warner's top five showing was her second of the season, while it was also the second top 10 finish of Fairbairn's career.
Old Dominion University won the invitational with a team score of 944 (325-312-307), three shots in front of EMU, St. John's University and Nova Southeastern University. ODU's Elizabeth Haycock held on for medalist honors with a 223 (77-72-74).
Redshirt sophomore Rushda Mallick (Cape Town, South Africa-Glenwood House-Cape Peninsula University of Technology) finished the event with a 241 (79-83-79) for a 16th place tie. Playing as an individual, Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada-Richmond Hill) notched a 241 (81-82-78)to move up from 22nd to 16th place tie.
Eastern Michigan returns home to Ypsilanti before making the trek to Columbus, Ind., April 14-15, for the Indiana Invitational. Last year, the Eagles finished as the runner-up after the tournament was scaled back to 36 holes due to thunderstorms in the area. EMU posted rounds of 306 and 309 to finish with a score of 615. Louisville took the team title with a score of 593, followed by EMU, Illinois (619) and the host Hoosiers (622).
