WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team struggled at times during the final round to finish in 11th place at the Boilermaker Invitational at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex Sunday, April 22. The Eagles posted a team score of 305 to finish the two-day, 54-hole event at 920 (314-301-305). Indiana University won the team title with a score of 877 (301-294-282), while the University of Iowa finished second at 879 (302-285-292).
Sophomore Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) was the Eagles' top finisher, carding a tie for 41st place with a 54-hole mark of 230 (80-72-78). Zach MacDougall (Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada-Centennial) and Casey Olsen (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Oakland University) each grabbed a share of 45th place with a 232.
Derek East (Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada-St. Paul's-University of New Orleans) shot a 233 (79-80-74) to finish the tournament in a tie for 51st place. Rounding out the rotation, Brian Burt (Dimondale, Mich.-Holt) carded rounds of 84, 76 and 75 for 55th place with a 235.
Luke Guthrie of Illinois claimed individual medalist honors with a five-under 213. Seven Mid-American Conference schools competed in the tournament with EMU recording the fifth-best finish, bettered only by Kent State University (2nd), Northern Illinois University (7th), Bowling Green State University (909) and the University of Akron (10th)
Following a week off, EMU will return to action on Friday, May 4, when the Eagles travel to the Mid-American Conference Championship hosted by NIU at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill. The three-day event will run through Sunday, May 6.
