CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University sophomore Natachia Watkins (South Euclid, Ohio-Brush) was one of 12 student-athletes named to the Academic All-Mid-American Conference team for women's basketball, the league office announced Monday, April 16.
Watkins is the 13th EMU women's basketball player to earn academic honors from the MAC and the first since the 2009-10 campaign when Tavelyn James garnered the honor. Watkins currently owns a 3.21 cumulative GPA as a simulation, animation & gaming major.
She was joined by Sina King and Taylor Ruper of Akron, Jessica Slagle and Chrissy Steffen of Bowling Green, Teresa Semalulu of Buffalo, Trisha Krewson of Kent State, Courtney Osborn of Miami, Tenishia Benson of Ohio, Courtney Ingersoll and Haylie Linn of Toledo and Maria Iaquaniello of Western Michigan.
The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
A third team All-MAC selection in 2011-12, Watkins proved to fill a complimentary offensive role for the Green and White. Watkins averaged 12.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game for the Eagles, while boasting a 42.5 field goal percentage. The South Euclid, Ohio native has posted 21 double-digit point performances this season, including six double-doubles where she notched double-figure points and rebounds.
